Plaids

I am fairly new here, & this may have been discussed before, but I would like others opinion on the wearing of plaids. I have never worn one & I have nothing particuler agains them, although, I do think them a bit BRIGADOONISH. It would be interesting to see what others think.

In a nutshell.

(1) Plaids are considered traditionally to be very formal wear (think what a Groom would wear at his wedding)

(2) Plaids are attached to the gentleman's jacket with a brooch at the shoulder

(3) Many people just like plaids and decide to wear them for daywear (even wearing them without jackets)

(4) You should wear one if you like it, when you like it.

(5) I personally think plaids are very dashing

As for Brigadoon...

PROS : The dancing was excellent (but it has Gene Kelly in it, so that's a given.) Some of the outfits were neat. Cyd Charisse!

CONS : I found it to be the least memorable musical film I have ever seen. The songs were completely unmemorable. I'm trying to remember any lyrics or tune from the show. The only one I can even halfway hum is "Brigadoon" which in my mind goes:

(Sweeping Chorus): "Brigadoon, Brigadoon!"

(Mumbling lyrics): "something, mumble, something, something...eat a haggis"

(Sweeping Chorus): "Brigadoon, Brigadoon!"

(Mumbling lyrics): "something, something, mumble, mumble...play some golf"

(Sweeping Chorus): "Brigadoon, Brigadoon!"

(Mumbling lyrics): "something, something, mumble, Scotland has a lot of sheep"

Also there seemed to be an obligatory sheep in almost every other scene. Last, but not least...THE TREWS, THE TREWS, OH MY THE TREWS!

I wear solid color kilts except on occassion when I wear my Craig tartan, and plaid button down shirts unless it's hot, when it's just a t-shirt.

I've been known to wear my tartan kilt, a plaid shirt, plaid tie, and argyle socks.

I love plaid. I'm even thinking of getting a plaid tattoo in the shape of a large asterisk.

I wear both types of plaids. The piper's plaid for parades and formal get togethers as a unit and the fly plaid for formal evening attire when not in a highland band type setting. I like the plaids and I think they bring the total look to a formal kilted evening.

I think the fly plaid is fine for very formal affairs. I had to wear a piper's plaid when I was in a band and disliked it because it was cumbersome.

Okay, now define a "formal affair".

I plan on wearing my Flyplaid while attending a reunion of the First Infantry Division this July. I would imagine that everyone there will be dressed anywhere from casual to suits, I'm curious to see if there will be another kilted person attending but I'm sure that I'll hear a lot about had they known that there would be kilts they would have worn theirs...lol

What about THE plaid? The blanket plaid that is usually worn folded and over the shoulder informally for cool evenings? I think that's still a great idea, unfortunately an expensive one with a plaid running upwards of $300.00 in Tartan.
