    Sporan Search

I hate to do this, and I tried the search, but will ask this question again, as I am sure it has been answered before.

I want an inexpensive sporan, under $40 if possible, but a "good" one for that price. I have read about magnetic catches rather than snaps, but don't know if that is good or not.

I have a black UK Survival and and a "tan" Mocker, black belt and black shoes unless I wear sandals, which are a dark brown. I hope that will be ok with the black belt.

What companies should I check? Will I have a problem holding the sporan up with the kilts above, or does the chain go through some of the belt loops?

It is funny, when these questions came up before I wasn't ready for the answers, and now I need them!

    Thanks

    DALE.

For a contemporary sporran Stillwater is probably going to be the only one.

There was a thread a couple of weeks ago about a sporran made by a Renn Faire supplier which got good reviews and I think it was under $40.

I've got two Buzz kidder Rob Roy sporrans (Brown and Black $50) and I think they are great, versatile starter sporrans. They have the magnet and I have had no issues with it. It's not so strong a magnet that you notice but it holds the flap down well.

I've considered modifying them a bit (spruce up the clasp, swap out the tassels...) but just haven't had time to play with it.

I really like the simple black braided leather sporran from Stillwater, and it was $35. I've never tried to wear it or my dressier sporran with my UK Mocker so I'm not sure how it would look. I think I remember Riverkilt having some pictures of this in his gallery.

    Cheers

The ones Panache just decribed are great. I got mine on Ebay, not Stillwater, but it's the same one. I love it.

I'd stay away from magnetic clasps. They can erase the magnetic strip on credit cards, etc.

    UK with Sporran Picture

    Dale,

I'm not so sure about wearing a sporran with a Utilikilt. I took a picture of me and my UK Mocker with the braided sporran so you could have an idea what it would look like. I think the UK front apron is too small to wear with a sporran, you cover up the neat "V" of the snaps, and with a UK's pocket's you don't really need the space. I put the sporran belt through the two back belt loops. Here's a photo.

I wear kilt hose, flashes, and sgian dubh (well a sgian dubh-like object) with my UK. It makes me feel it has a real "kilt" look. I think if you want to wear a sporran you should take a look at the Stillwater Standards and think about your first tartan kilt.

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers
