    Kilted Long Distance Cyclist

So we were sitting at the Macnaughton tent at the Campbell games and I spotted a fellow walking by with a nice bike, a bike helmet on, and a bright yellow and red lycra cycling top. Underneath that he has an inexpensive Black Watch kilt on, a sporran, and then his cycling shoes.

OK, this was TOO different, I had to speak up.

Turns out He's doing a mess of rides to raise money to find a cure for HIV, in memory of, and in tribute to his sister who died of AIDS a few years ago. And yes, he DOES cycle kilted, though he wears cycling shorts under his kilt when he's in the saddle. He says a kilt is the greatest thing around camp after a long ride, and that it's catching on, a number of folks who are doing the AIDS cure rides are wearing kilts around camp, now.

His sign indicated he'd ridden over 1200 miles to raise money to help find a cure. I say guid on ye, mate!

I started wearing kilts, when I raced mountain bikes, mostly as a just 'changing room'. Later realizing how comfortable it was to just stay kilted.

I'd be one of those folks. When I did the AIDS LifeCycle last year, I wore my (first) Utilikilt around camp in the evening. Actually, changing into it was one of the first things I did once I got to the tent and my bags.

I'd have a much tougher time actually RIDING in a kilt though, as I'm on a recumbent.

Heh, yeah... Spokebuster. I remember him from the AIDS LifeCycle last year. Didn't have the kilt going then, it was a big snail on his helmet. Still, was rather unique.

I'd do it. I ride a $1200 Specialized Transition Multi-sport. It's a race bike, but it's geared on the slacker end (as far as race bikes are concerned) so that it can also be used as a touring bike (albeit a quick one).
I DID ride kilted a week or so ago... got plenty of looks.

If I do any rides in Maine, methinks I'll do 'em kilted with my riding shorts underneath. That would ROCK. And it'd make great advertisement if I go into business making kilts.

I think I have a new hero. A man that puts actions behind his words, and does it with style! (....and Zyzzyx, you're up there, too).
