    in court

Had to go to court for a minor affair yesterday and of course wondered how I should dress for such a formal occasion. Since the summer had arrived (up in the 30s), I put on a white shirt, light-coloured casual kilt and sandals as usual.

Unsurprisingly, there were no other kiilts in sight (this is France), but I had imagined there would be dark suits and ties. But, no, sandals and open-necked shorts were the norm, a few bermudas, and no-one blinked an eye at my appearance.

We have come a long way from the time when a man would hardly dare venture out in public without closed shoes, jacket and tie.

The lawyers probably suffered most with their long black gowns. The judge was female and did not hesitate to throw her gown back off her bare shoulders.

    Martin,

This is an obvious slip-of-the-fingers on the keyboard, but the mental picture of shorts that go up to the neck . . . particularly the possibility of closed-necked shorts . . . talk about prison!!!

    Yes, forgive my poor typing.
Reading my own mistake, I did not think of shorts goinf up to the neck, but pictured someone who had forgotten to button up his fly. Excusable in a heat wave?

    Martin,

My most sincere apologies if my comment offended you . . . it was certainly was unintentional. I've been told I have a strange imagination at times . . .

I do lots of writing for work, and occasionally come out with some really good ones . . .

    In Court

Yes, at this time of year it gets warm wearing a black court robe over a dark coloured wool suit, whether its a navy pinstripe trouser suit in New Zealand Merino Wool or an Argyle Jacket with an all black heavyweight wool kilt. But this summer I have experimented by wearing a lightweight polycotton black kilt to court a couple of times and I don't think anyone noticed the difference.
