    UK in the UK

So I haven't posted in quite a while- been busy.

A very few of you may remember that I had an opportunity to spend some time in England for work. We'll I'm still in England and I'm staying- I got an offer for a permanent position so we're moving over.

In any case, here a few shots that were taken during our wonderings.

This was taken on an amazing hilltop near Caerphilly in Southern Wales. Wales is simply amazing.

Same hilltop, but a bit less artsy and you can actually see the kilt.

This was taken this last weekend in Trafalger Square in London. That's my son getting mauled by pigeons.

My son in his brand new black watch kilt! His first and he's darn pleased with it. The punks charged us 2 pounds for the shot, but it was worth it.

OK, not actually kilted here, it's just me doing my best impersonation of a football hooligan. I thought it was kind of funny.

So I have learned some things since being here. First is, in general, the public is no where near of accepting of a guy in a kilt as people have been in the US- at least near me. Negative comments have FAR outweighed positive ones- where in the US I have not gotten a negative comment in years. Second- I have learned that "Jock" is a derogatory term for a Scot, and if you happen to wander into a pub mere moments after England is eliminated from the World Cup in a kilt, you can expect to hear the term and risk a beating. Apparently there is not a lot of love between the Scots and the English when it comes to football, and just after a defeat it not a good time to walk into a room full of drunken fans in a kilt. I am firmly convinced had my wife and kids not been with me I would have been in trouble.

All for now, more to follow.

Great photos, Paco, and congratulations on the job. Where in the UK are you, or will you be? Hope we might be able to meet up whilst you are here.

The above does not correspond with my experiences at all. I seldom get either complimentary or derogatory remarks thesedays - but then, I avoid punks and football fans like the plague, and I seldom go into town/city pubs, or even my local country pubs.

You must have been aware that during the World Cup, emotions of those who follow this 'sport' ran much higher than at other times.

Out of sheer devilment, whilst every other car on our roads sported a pair of St. George's Cross flags recently, I flew a pair of Saltire (St. Andrew's Cross) flags on mine. I expected to be hooted at or shouted at, but there was no reaction at all other than from a neighbour who praised me for supporting Andy Murray who was playing at Wimbledon!!

Some nice pics, and I love the one of your son with the punkers!

I am also way envious of the opportunity to work in the UK for a spell. Maybe we need to take a trip and see what opportunities arise!

    Ham -

I think therein lies the problem. You need to get in your car in your best kilt, go into all the pubs in all the cities in England, and give these guys a good talking to!

That will straighten them out right quick so we don't have to deal with this when we hop over the pond to visit.

Let us know when you have completed the task and the coast is clear.

I am currently staying at a corporate flat in Reading (perhaps that's part of the problem with the comments?), but will be moving to a house in Upper Basildon in August. I just did a google map for West Sussex and it would appear I'm not that far from you and would be honored to meet you.

Thanks for the kind comments all.

No need to avoid punks I guess...

They look scary, but I experienced they see kiltwearers as "cool guys".

On several occasions those Mad Max types made compliments...makes sense...punks and kiltwearers are both out of line
