Flashless garters for kilt hose

I pretty much wear Birkenstocks exclusively (even have some Birk clogs for occasions when most wear dress shoes). However, I sometimes have to wear boot-type shoes (like Skechers) or if absolutely neccessary, Navy issue Oxfords (only dress show I like). Since I am new to the kilt, I am a little nervous about wearing flashes, and kilt hose in general. Are there any garters out there without the flashes? Or maybe I should just get over it and go for it . . .

Actually, the flashes are not that bad...they can be a solid color if you think that tartan would look too...well...flashy. If you look at several photos of some of the members of Xsmarks you'll see that in some cases the flashes call attention to themselves and sometimes you barely notice them.

Although I do not know of a supplier for flashless garters, I have found that hose from www.wbrewin.com/uk are not only a great deal, they seem to stay up well on thier own. Of course if you wear hose down (scrunched) you don't need garters at all.

I just took some elastic and velcro and made a pair of flashless garters. There are times I don't want flashes and it's easy to make garters.

I just took some elastic and velcro and made a pair of flashless garters. There are times I don't want flashes and it's easy to make garters.

Or just get some elastic and stitch it together at the right size for your leg. The velcro isn't necessary . . . the elastic can just be slipped over the calf.

I was reluctant to buy flashes because I was afraid they would not fit over my - uh - enormous calves, so I made my own. It was easy with a little elastic and Velcro. But then I bought some from a store that I could actually handle, and figured that if I didn't like them, I could return them. I was suprised to find out 1) that they were very adjustable and fit fine, and 2) that the flashes were not sewn on. I can easily slip them off and go flashless if I want to and still need a garter to keep the socks up after they've stretched out over my - uh - enormous calves.

So, get some for the fun of it, and go either way when you want to.

I agree with what most of the others are saying. A lot of the flashes you can buy come with elastic garters with either a velcro fastening or a wee buckle style fastener. Both pair of flashes I have came with the elastic/velcro combo, and the flashes slide right off. I couldn't understand a reason for the garters until Rex pointed out the possibility of stretching the elastic in the hose out. Garters and flashes are inexpensive. Get yourself a solid pair and have fun I've already decided that any tartan kilt I buy and/or have made in the future I will request the matching tartan flashes with it.

You are already taking the plunge, go for it! It really looks sharp, especially when dressing up your kilt.
