    Request for location clarification

I don't how the rest of you folk go but I'm often baffled as to where some of our members hail from. I love to know where the tales and characters of our community come from and yet so often the abbreviations are quite cryptic. I THINK the majority that I'm unsure of are residents of the U.S.A. but I'm never entirely sure. Examples include (and not pointing fingers at all so no offence if your from these locations) Montgomery County, MD; Marquette, MI; Chatsworth GA; Vacaville,Ca; Frederick, MD.
This is just a few but you get the idea. It's a big 'ol world and if you feel like sharing please feel free to be clearer for the rest of us.
    Cheers, Erin.

Good point, Erin. We in the US are used to being able to put the 2-letter abbreviation for the state we live in on a letter, profile, etc. and have it be recognized as such. However, on the internet, those abbreviations aren't as recognizable. With a topic like kilts that has interested parties all over the world, it's important to be a little more sensitive to other folks who might want to know where we're from.

The ones you've listed are all US states, for starters:
    MD: Maryland
    MI: Michigan
    GA: Georgia
    CA: California

Maybe those of us who are putting our locations on could not abbreviate the state and put USA on the end so we are more descriptive.

Have you seen the KiltMap? http://www.frappr.com/xmarksthescot

I'm on it and FYI Chatsworth is 100 miles north of Atlanta Ga and about 40 miles SE of Chattanooga Tennessee in the USA.

I'm on DSL and the map loads slow even for me, so consider yourself warned.

Frederick, Maryland (MD) is about 45 miles northwest of Washington, DC (District of Columbia), in the U.S. of course.

Location name has been changed to clarify.

You are correct, It is only proper to use state abbreviations for mailing purposes and not for identifying where one is from. I apologize as I do it myself. The United States Post Office has a site that deciphers all the abbreviations.

    I hope this helps, O'Neille

I have updated my profile so now my home state is spelled out. Thanks for letting us know about the oversight.

I am about 30 miles or so southwest of Richmond Virginia. I am located 9.8 miles off US route 460 west, going towards roanoke Virginia. The actual road I live on is a little dirt lane, just off Virginia state route 708, which follows the route of Robert E Lee's retreat to Appomatox Court house and the surrender that ended the US Cival War.

How funny you should mention this...we had a gentleman from the Land Down Under walking down our street yesterday photographing the homes that were built by Walter Burley Griffin (worked for Frank Lloyd Wright and designed the Australian capitol in Canberra...a minor architect in the USA but a big noise in Australia). My wife and daughter said hello and when he replied they caught the accent...they asked "where are you from?" to which he replied, "Australia."...and my daughter said, "Yes, we figured as much but WHERE in Australia?" The fella couldn't believe that anyone here would be that curious as to inquire that specifically about where in Australia he was from...but wife and daughter were because we actually know quite a few folks from there.

The two letter abbreviation is used to designate a Federal zone and I won't use it, I always use "Calif." or whatever the old abbreviation is when I address anything.

    Long story.

    Chris.
