    Here's number 2!!

Ok, I've got to say up front that with this just being my second kilt, I'm still not up to working in tartan that goes for $70-80 bucks a yard. So, I went to the fabric store and got what I thought was a plaid that I thought looked pretty good. It's heavy weight cotton and I would consider this a summer kilt only.

I'm getting more comfortable with the technique and I was going to try pleating to the sett, but I found out the the sett was too small to make for nice pleats, so I decided to pleat to the stripe. This one will take up about 7 yards of material, 24 inches wide.
    Here' a pic..

The front apron is done as is most of the pleating, although I still want to flip it over and stitch down the back of the pleats. Since it is a very light weight material, I decided to put in a lining to the front apron. It's polyester with a bit of fuzziness on the reverse side (smooth side goes to me).
    Here's a pic of that...

I think this will go well with the black dress jacket that I just converted. I don't have any pics of that yet, but its just the same as my tweed converstion except that it's a black material.

I hope that the "Tartan Police" will let this slip by. Its practice for me and I'm not trying to pass it off as anything other than what it is, but I do think it will make for a nice looking kilt.
Maybe I should call it the tartan of Clan MacFabricStore.

That looks good to me. How long did it take to get the pleats pinned?

Actually pinning the pleats was a lot easier than I thought.
When I was making my solid color kilt I had to be very careful with the measurements of the pleats to make sure that they didn't get crooked, but with the plaid, all I had to do was follow the pattern. I stitched every pleat on the edge (on the front) and it took me about 3 hours to do stitch and pin.

After checking for size, I will want to flip it over and stitch the other side of the pleats to make sure they lie flat.

Once that's done, I'll start the inner apron.

    Amazing...just amazing!

The one time I got out the pins in an effort to sew down the pleats in a gathered SportKilt I wound up bleeding on the kilt!

The only way I think I'd attempt to make a kilt would be if there was a way to do it with glue instead of thread.

    You're a braver man than I Jim.

Well, I'll finish it because I'm so close, but I probably won't wear it. It WAS good experience for pleating with plaid though. Being relatively inexperienced I didn't know how much Clan "MacTablecloths" were looked down upon.

Oh well, part of the learning process I guess.
