    Commparing bagpipes to hissing roaches.

The Animal channel show "Buggin'with Ruud" is showing an episode about the bugs of Madagascar. There is a roach that hisses thru muscular contractions and the aussie host of the show compared the noise to bag pipes. He actually had two kilted pipers playing the pipes. He has no sense of good music. To compare pipe music to bugs farting. Harumph!

    [entomologist hat on]
Actually, a more approximate analogy would be bugs hiccupping, as the abdominal spiracles are linked to the respiratory bronchi, but hiccups are caused by an involuntary muscular contraction ...
    [entomologist hat off]

... and the pneumatics involved in both actions (piping and hissing) are similar, but no, that's not an analogy that I would use either.

I tuned properly, the pipes can sound simply amazing...

if not they sound amazingly awful.

    ...flatulant orthoptera notwithstanding.

    Belching Blattodea.
You have to admit, though, comparing it to the playing of the bagpipe does sound more impressive than, say -
"The Madagascar Hissing Cockroach - Whoppee Cushion of the Insect World".

Of course, I remember the episode of "Nature" where David Attenborough compared troops of lemurs challenging each other to British football fans.

Shame they don't sound more like bagpipes. I'll bet they would play for a WHOLE lot less pay!

    Meanwhile somewhere out in cyberspace...

An outraged entomologist posts a thread on his Insect forum about how the Animal channel show "Buggin'with Ruud" is showing an episode about the bugs of Madagascar. The aussie host of the show compared the sounds of the unique muscular contractions of the Hissing roach to the noise of bag pipes. He actually had two kilted pipers playing the pipes. He has no sense of the wonders of insects. To compare the amazing sounds of the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach to...Bagpipes! . Harumph!

Great reversal, Panache. It's all in your point of view.
