    Welsh Dragon in Leather-Checkbook

My wife asked if I could make her a leather checkbook cover. I said OK. I've had a kit that I started 20 years ago but never finished. So I put a dragon on the front, from the Welsh Flag.

It was practice for making sporrans. Friday, on the US Holiday, we drove down to Munich (about 2 1/2 hour) to a hobby leather store. I was able to pick up enough carving leather for about 4 sporrans, and some dye and tools.
I took along an earlier sporran I had made with a rampant lion to show the clerk how thick the leather needed to be. He was complimentary as well he should be to a customer who dropped a lot of money in 30 minutes. But it was a pleasant outing (all in German, of which I understood about 50& of what he said, but we got the job done.)

I didn't go kilted in downtown Munich, but I did wear my Ancient Hay kilt and Lovat Green Argyll jacket to dinner at the hotel we stayed at. No particular comments but lots of smiles and great service from the staff.

Now I have enough materials for at least 4 sporrans. I'll probably give these as gifts, and maybe next year figure out a way to put some up for sale if anyone is still interested. From what I see, no one is doing a version with carved leather front flaps. I'll probably do at least 2 rampant lions and maybe an X-Marks pin version for practice.

Looking forward to a kilted Thanksgiving meal at the Post Dining Facility in a couple of weeks.

    Regards,

    Tom

Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?

    Always love Welsh Dragon designs!

But then I suppose I'm biased!

    Tom,

Your leather carving really is good. I tried it several years ago and my results weren't nearly as good as yours. I look forward to seeing more of your work.
