I'm so sorry to hear about the disasters kiltedfirepiper and hope your fingers and the pipes are soon back in fine fettle.
I have decided to give piping a try and have ordered a practice chanter and a course from the College of Piping, the pipes will come later!

HOLY CRAP!!
My condolences upon the death of your pipes (I'd be devestated!), but I'm glad you weren't hurt any worse than you were in the explosion. Dunbar's a reputable maker; are their ferrules really so bad they need compounding? My McCallum's are electroplated nickel silver; on a high speed wheel I'd be afraid of taking off more than just the tarnish, even with rouge.
It can be quite scary just how fast things can suddenly go bad wrong with power tools (particularly big stationary ones)...glad it was your drone cord and not your sleeve.

Hi,
Wow, glad you weren't more seriously injured. As a furniture maker, I can attest to the fact that power tool accidents happen in the blink of an eye-or faster-consequently, I hope you always make it a point to wear safety glasses.
When working on tools that spin-lathe, grinder, etc., its actually a very good idea to wear both safety glasses and a face shield. I've had, on more than one occasion, the frightening experience of having pieces "explode" while being turned and the face shield prevented facial injuries.
Bob
In theory there is no difference between theory and practice but in practice there is.

Yikes! I'll bet that was exciting for a few seconds. I thought the whole point of those pipes was that there's no maintenance. Oh well. In the future maybe you can learn to appreciate the rich patina that develops when you don't mess with them. That's the excuse I use. I hope your finger is back in shape real soon. You're lucky nothing worse happened.
And the word is "ferrule".
