    Custom Kilt Pins

I have a couple of ideas for kilts pins that I'd love to have made but have no idea if/where I could have them made. They are very specific to what I do and wouldn't be open to having vast quantities of them made, unlike the X marks pins. Any ideas? Too bad cafe press et al., don't offer things like custom pins.

This is a good start. We have so many metal workers on the board that someone will probably be able to help you. I've been working on a design for a Fraser kilt pin, so I'll be watching to see how this turns out as well. I'm finalizing the line art now, so hopefully soon it will be ready to cast.

I have an idea for a kilt pin, minus the pin part. But I don't know how to make it.

I'll learn soon enough though. School has courses on broach creation and wax casting.

Seems bad to poke a hole through your kilt, so I have this idea for a kilt pin that would stay in place with out actually poking any holes.

You might try Penny's of Thunder Bay.

Alternatively, if you're the DIY sort, you might try hand casting in pewter using RTV silicone molds; miniaturemolds.com

Here are a nice set of videos of casting jewelry.

I don't think these are suitable for metal casting but it was a good video

Apparently casting jewelers pewter isn't quite as rigorous a procedure as it once was...my understanding is that there's a silicon based mold making material that makes it pretty much user friendly. I was at a hobby shop wherre they had some of the goodies to do this and the hobby-shop-guy was telling me that it was a no-brainer...we were chatting about the old lead casting toy soldier kits and he showed me the line of supplies that he had for this newer casting process. A little on-line research should provide more information. Look around and see if you have any "art center" type institutions anywhere near you...we have a couple scattered throughout Chicago and they give classes in all sorts of things and probably classes in casting.

Hey Cinnabar, don't know if you saw the thread a few weeks ago. But, Blacksmith here at Xmarks, was very generous and made me this erlenmyer flask pin, which is specific to what you and I both do.

look in the phone book under Advertising specialist, That would probably be the cheapest way of getting someone else to do it.

Depending on what you wanted there are many Hopi craftsmen who might be able to do the job. I can ask my lady to see if one can do your work if you want.

Have you considered ceramics?? I made a handful of simple St. Andrews discs this summer, glazed with different colors, and added studs with epoxy. They work great.
They might break if bashed against something hard, but so far I've had no problems.
