    A question for Panache,

You had stated in another thread about a dress sporran that was on the cheaper side.

    http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/s...=dress+sporran

Do you have any first hand experience with their economy fur sporrans? I have a wedding to go to in April and do not want to spend $300 on a nice dress sporran when I still need a nice daywear one.

I am thinking that this sporran would only be worn for the burns supper later this month and then a wedding or two.

    Thanks for any advice,
    Mike

    Mike,

I haven't tried their economy fur sporrans. Though I have looked at the grey rabbit fur one myself. The leather one with cantle I purchased from them is very handsome. In terms of construction I do not think it would stand up well to heavy use. For my formal needs it does just fine. One warning, the chain belt that came with the sporran was very low quality. I use the dress chain sporran belt that came with my braided black sporran from Stillwater that was an order of magnitude better in quality and looks. You could always email the Crofts and ask what their return policy is. They seem like nice people.

Another option for less expensive dress sporrans is Sport Kilt. I have never ordered a sporran from them, but Seamus always provides good customer service. The goatskin sporrans Sport Kilt has look pretty nice. I wish there were some pictures of the black and white versions.

Lastly Stillwater is offering a fur day sporran for only $46 that looks very nice. Depending on how formal you are looking at, this one might fit the bill. It's worth checking out in any case. And Jerry sets the gold standard for customer service.

Hope this was of some help.

    Good Luck

I'll be interested to hear Panache's views on this, but certainly the price will to some extend depend on the rarity of the animal whose fur has been used. I just bought a new leather sporran with brown rabbit fur front on e-bay last night for £16.99, which is about $30, with chain included, same as this:-.

The same seller also offers rabbit fur sporrans in white, grey or black fur and also supplies rabbit fur sporrans with a cantle for £20.99, (approx $40) if you needed a cheap dress sporran.

I got that brown goat sporran from SportKilt for Christmas. I like it.
It looks a lot better in person than in the picture. It seems a bit hard and not very giving, but I'll likely only wear it to church anyway. It seems a good buy.
It don't mean a thing, if you aint got that swing!!

I found my dress sporran on ebay for $30 delivered. Yes, it's made in Pakistan but it looks as good as any other out there. I will wear it once or twice a year probably so to spend more than $50 would have been a waste to me.

This search on ebay turns up several reasonable sporrans

depending on the style you are looking for. For most of us there is just no need to pay a lot for a dress sporran.

My brother and I received sporrans for christmas that were bought on ebay also, and as far as I can tell theres absolutely nothing wrong with them. Ebay like anything else can be very good or very bad, for some reason ebay has gotten the reputation that anything kilt related being sold on it is bad. This simply isn't true.
true there are bad products but with some investigation and some common sense you can spot the fakes and get yourself an exelent good qaulity dress sporran for $30

Yes, there are some good kilt-related things for sale on eBay, but I would guess only one in 50 to 100 of those advertised. The vast majority is over-priced, poorly manufactured junk that can be bought directly from Pakistan much cheaper. If you have the couple of hours a day needed to separate the drek from the good stuff, go for it.

I'm with Cavscout. I purchased a black rabbit fur sporran with cantle from ebay. The seller was located in Scotland but I don't know where the sporran was made. I examined it carefully and can find no fault with it. Shipped to my door the cost was $52 CDN!! For the amount I will wear it, I expect it to last a LONG time.

Thanks for all of the input guys. In the end, I decided to order this one in black...

Per Panache's request above, I will post pictures when it arrives.
