    Hinky dinky sporran doo!

    Gents, ladies, rabbles and rabblettes:

You know how we talk about the kilt as being attire, not a costume? My longest gripe in the kilted world (well, aside from the jones time!) has been the whole sporran issue.

I've got a couple of the Buzz Kidder sporrans, and a pair of the SWK Nightstalker sporrans as well. Mostly, I just use the SWK. (One of them has a stripped zipper, which I'll probably get repaired, but that's why I've got a spare.)

With the Buzz Kidder sporrans, everything ends up down at the very bottom of the sporran. Getting to stuff is . . . problematic. My keys, for instance, always end up at the very, very bottom, buried under cards in a clip, more cards in another clip, money in another clip, a cell phone, and maybe a pack of smokes and a lighter.

The SWK, of course, gives you three pocket options. First, the "sporran pouch" up front with the bellows, second, the "great huge honking pocket" that can hold pretty much anything, and third the zippered pocket in the flap.

I really, really like the SWK.

It's nylon, of course, and black, which are two limiting factors. And I've already got the BKs, which I don't use much due to the "everything ends up down at the very bottom" issue.

Thinking of that, I wondered . . . anyone use anything like this? http://www.countycomm.com/POCKETORGANIZER.htm Or like this? http://www.specopsbrand.com/ProductD...p?ProductID=5# While I have an almost visceral aversion to "tactical gear" I can't help thinking that something along these lines would just be the berries. (Bear's "sporganizer" seems to be much the same, only lots less tactimal.)

I figured I would ask and see if anyone else had tried it before I invested my hard earned shekels towards this. If no one else has, I guess I'll be the guinea pig!

    Best,

    KC

Never tried anything like that I just dig around till I find what I need, and if I am wearing a jacket or a shirt with pockets the pockets get full fast.

Yeah, I've got that problem too. Last night the lovely and talented Mrs. Kid Cossack and I went to dinner at Rudi Lechner's restaurant here in Baghdad on the Bayou. I had to do the "pocket dance" to remember if my keys were in the sporran, or in the pockets of my jacket (which isn't a real kilt jacket, but is a nice M1-ish bomber jacket I picked up in Mongolia). Back when I wore photographer vests, the problem was worse worse worse. Fifteen thousand pockets and I could never remember exactly where I put things. (Still better than wearing trews!)

I have a sporran prototype idea floating in my noggin that would solve ALL of these problems.

I lack the means to construct it, and the knowledge.

The genius, my dear brother Dread, of humanity is our ability to cooperate. I am pretty much like you---I have these really nifty-swifty ideas, and no abilty to render them in plastic form. (in the old plastic=tangible meaning of plastic.) We've got folks here who are wizards at leather gear, and other gear. Build the Dreadbelly Ultimate Sporran Company and solve our issues! (I'll buy one!)

PS if you're ever in H-town and hankering for sassidge and cabbidge (or sausage and cabbage, even), ye'll nay gang aft agley if you drop in to Rudi Lechner's.

    http://www.rudilechners.com/

Gets an older crowd, but heck I'm starting to fit in with that crowd myself. The pork shank is WHEEEEEE DOGGIES (as we say in Texas). The heritage plate, even more so. Live music on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with tuba and xylophone and cowbells and alphorns.

Check out the recipe page, too! (Sorry to go off topic.)

The problem with sporrans is that they are built and then used from a 2D perspective. This comes with restrictions.

A 3D approach needs to be taken to take advantage of what a sporran, or for that matter, any storage item, is capable of.

To give you a better understanding of what I mean; A plain simple folder is a 2D means of storing paper. A binder, with multiple folds, flaps, and the ability to open to drastically increase the approachable storage space is a 3D means of storing paper.

The same with sporrans. Make every available square inch of the inside approachable from the outside.

    Edit.

I have even conceived of the notion of a 4D sporran... A 4 dimensional object tucked in to 3 dimensional space. It tickles the back of my mind and taunts me. An example of a 4D object immersed in 3D space.

Although if I actually tried to make a sporran like that, I am pretty sure I'd be punished for breaking some kind of law for interdimensional space or something.

I make a sporran that has a built in Credit card holder dispenser, money clip, seperate pocket for cell phone. It is a rob roy design with pleats that allows the sporran to open up.
I have found that it works very well, easy to get your hand in and find your stuff.
http://www.rkilts.com/leather_sporrans.htm you can find an example here.
