Kilted skiing- yes, snowboarding - no

I went skiing last night, first time in about 5 years and the first time ever kilted.

The skiing went great, no problems at all. I never got cold, there was very little breeze under the kilt, though my fiancee would be upset had I tried it regimental. (I might have froze some of her favorite parts!)

I started off the evening snowboarding though, and that is a definate no-no. I had snowboarded before, but only twice, and at my best was just good enough not too fall (too much). Well, after five years off, I was no where near my best.
Falling on my back wasnt much of a problem, but it was the time when I fell forward that hurt. My knees took the brunt of the impact, and Southern California snow is mostly artificial, which means little frozen ice crystals. It's like sliding on cold sand paper.
After one run and two bloody knees I swapped the board for some ski's, and went on well from there.

I got lots of comments as you might expect, the main one being "aren't you cold?" to which I gave Ron's reply ("Heat rises"). I got lots of nice looks, high fives, and appreciative comments from the snow bunnies as well. One even tried to look up my kilt when I was on the chair lift!

That sounds like fun. The SoCal mountains are supposed to get a decent dash of snow today and tonight. Maybe head back up afterwards.
What did your fiancee think about the snow bunnies?

If I were to approach the idea of snowboarding in a kilt, I do it the same as I would rollerblading, protecting the knees with some kind of pads (because you never know what you might hit!)

    Great outing! Have fun!

I don't think I could ever try snowboarding on a kilt. Skiing I would consider, if I ever did ski. I'm just too much a fan of the boarding to switch out for skis though.

Braver than I. I would never dream of attempting it.

I made a kilt once out of thick polar fleece to go snowboarding in it wasn't to bad I wore long johns under it just incase I wiped out, I went try to to do a 360 in it but everyone asked me to stop after the third attempt. I don't think I would ever make another one it was more fun.

Kilted snowboarding is a blast. You just need the right gear. To solve your knee problem brigade quarter master has some sweet knee pads made for swat teams, they go from the ankle up over the knee. No problem fitting over boots either. You are right wearing somthing under, keeps you from suffering what we call "ice hole". A very painful and embarrassing condition! sorry for the bad pun!!!

Sounds like fun. I've seen a kilted skier on the Cairngorm range.

IIRC, in an issue of Powder Magazine from the early '90s there was a pic of a guy in full highland dress, boarding in Scotland somewhere. So, it has been done before. Personally, I'd be more likely to do kilted snowshoeing... In fact, if I get a chance in the next couple weeks to go snowshoeing, I will be wearing my MacKenzie military-weight 9 yarder...
