Kangaroo fur semi-dress sporran
Will be something like this:
With a kangaroo fur face, knotwork metal cantle, black leather braided tassels and a hidden magnetic 'snap'. After looking at pics here this morning, an internal phone or wallet pouch is a high possibility too!
For the new project, I've just got the skin, a small Grey Kangaroo skin with reddish/fawnish undertones and edges. It should be good for about 5-6 semidress sporran faces. I've already been told to make a second (for Donal, my FIL). I'm just waiting for the cantle to arrive now before I put knife to leather. I'll take a few pics during the construction for future posting.
This one will be for the wedding in Edinburgh (April).

That kangaroo leather is tough stuff. I've considered facing some sporrans with it, but I cannot bring myself to make that first cut in the beautiful pelt.

Would love to see photos of it as well when you done with it. I have seen a beautiful buff colored dress sporran done from "Roo" pelt. It will be interesting to see the color of the grey pelt, I bet a big red would look good too. I wonder since seal is a no go here in the states due to Marine Protection acts and such, if there is a ban on "Roo" fur as well.

Here's the first pic, it's not finished yet. The tassles have to be finished before they can be attached, waiting for Marie to complete the Turkshead knots.
I will put up some step by step pics later so anyone interested can see how it's put together. I have to resize them first.

1) Here's the pattern I used along with the heavier leather for the rear panel (I already have the belt/chain attachment sewn in place here) This pattern is a development of the one I used for my leather day sporran altered to suit the width of the cantle.
2) Here you can see the 'roo skin with the pattern where I intend to cut the face piece out, you can see there are many other sporrans in this skin.
3)The 'roo skin doesnt have enough body to hold the shape, so it will have another piece of plain leather glued to it to stiffen it. All edges will eventually be sewn so there's no chance of delamination.
4) Here I've glued the liner(with pockets) into the main body (why Salmon? they have Salmon fishing in Scotland don't they). The Magnetic snap is fitted into the salmon leather liner before gluing. Also the leather and the edges have been died Black.
The front piece has had the top edge bound with Black leather and had the Black leather gusset sewn right round (top sewn also). You might be able to see a glued edge on the salmon pink, I glue the edge of the gussett to the back panel around the edge (5mm approx) to hold it in place while sewing. I use a centre alignment mark at the bottom (on both gussett and back panel) and work my way back to the top when attaching front to back. A flat foot on the sewing machine helps control here when sewing them together.
5) The other part of the magnetic snap was then put in place once I could use the flap for alignment. It holds OK, but seems difficult to locate/close

'roo leather is niiiice!
G'day folks!
Yeah, 'roo leather is nice, and 'roo pelts are plentiful... I've often been tempted myself!
I've got a question regarding the magnetic snaps though. I'm a little concerned about the magnetic snap interferring with the magnetic stripe on my credit card / atm card / etc. Has anyone had any issues in this regard?
cheers

I got it from a mob on eBay called scottishitems. If you want to take the gamble, buy from them but don't expect quick delivery or them to answer any emails.
