    "poor man's sporran"

Well, I thought that this was a more appropriate place to show this off.

well I will start with some of the details,

it is made of white all cotton heavy fabric, like a kaki trouser. it is 9 inches by 9 inches. I was planning on doing it in all leather. I had everything sitting out in my workshop and here comes Mom with the puppy. warning for dog owners, puppys who like chewing things, LOVE leather. but anyways I have the need for a sporran, and I have the patterns all cut and made in paper. so I thought I would try fabric. and maybe I can get out the the craft store soon and get some more leather.

quick question along that lines, does anyone know if the wal-mart fabric selection carries the fake plastic leather, I think I might try one in that before the real stuff. but I don't know where to get any. I belive it is called

the back reenforcement and front reenforcement are both heavyer leather, the back one is a heavy tanned one that I could carve if I had the skill to. (have the tools but not the skill )

but anyways, here are the pictures:
First is the size compairison, the boot is a US size 9

Next we have the front with flap closed

    front with flap open

    back with flap open

    front with bag open

oh and if you wonder why I call it the poor man's sporran, it cost me a total of 3 hours to make, and about 30 cents of raw materials.

but I am really pleased with it. it holds everything I need it to.

tell me what you think, and you don't have to be polite

    Casey,

From here it looks good and quite clever. I think you've got a nice casual sporran there. Nice job!

    Casey,

Good for you for making a beginning! It take time to become proficient in making sporrans. From my own experience the first 5 were strictly practice pieces. I learned from each one.

I'd suggest you try to get some scrap leather pieces from Tandy Leather or some other source, maybe even upholstry leather scraps and practice the cutting and sewing. Colors don't even have to match.

As far as carving and stamping leather, you can get some simple line patterns from google images for say a shamrock or a cross and practice on small pieces of leather. Maybe there is a Scouter in your area that teaches the Leathercraft Merit Badge who can help you get started.

There are several DYI'ers on the forum that could help you with specific problems you may run in to. Some of my pics may give you some ideas also.

Your cloth sporran is OK for learning the basics, but you will undoubtedly want a leather one soon. The first one doesn't have to be fancy, it's just practice!

Best wishes and let me know if you need some help.

    Tom

well, I think you can tell, my colors don't match now!! hehehe.

I just needed something to go with the new kilt I got, I am tired of having to wear shorts with pockets under to hold the wallet and phone.

I think I might try an apolstry store, or the neighbor's couch.

I see what you mean with the first 5 practice, the one I made in paper was a huge help. (more of a visual learner, you give me a pattern I can most likely follow it.)

now the ironic part is, you say that I might be able to find a scouter who is a leather work merit badge councilor. well, I am a registered leather work and metal work councilor.I have the tools, and the know how, but not the skill, (and carving isn't covered any more unfortunately)

    thanks!!!

looks like you made good use of the pattern. You might check out thrift stores for a big woman's purse in leather (that is, a woman's purse that is big, not the purse of a big woman) that you can cut up into sporran pieces parts.

Nice first try. Sten Rune and I used Cardboard and binliners for our first sporran.
You obviosly have a good base to improves on.

For materials take a walk to the nearest Junk shop or what ever you call them in the states.
Look for old leather coats. Fun fur or real fur coats which have gone passed their usfull perpose.Try and re use things you find.
Old leather briefcases and scatchels are all good sources of leather with the used patina that looks good. You don't have to break the bank to start.

PS. Junk shops are a good source of horn and antler too. Just get the saw and sandpaper out and have fun (It smells a bit so do it outdoors)

Keep up the good work. You are doing well, all it takes is practice. And it's always best that you use cheaper materials to practice one (esp. since you are learning). As for the tooling of the leather...Tandy has some free designs and tutorials on the basics. I, who can't draw, even is looking into trying this once I get my new belt blank.
