I know this store and have visited it once or twice. Although nothing like as bad as the notorious Gold Brothers tourist-trap shops on and around The Royal Mile, this one does try to catch the tourist - by selling just about anything that can be called 'Scottish'. Their inventory is just far too big for a retail shop. The Scottish Store does sell kilts and Highland Dress accessories, but this is not their major raison d'etre.
Having just looked for their website, which I had bookmarked, I find that they have changed their web address and they are calling themselves "Colin of Edinburgh, Bespoke Kiltmakers" - but they still list everything under the sun!! I do not know what web address you had for them but they are now at http://scottishstore.com and their 'phone number is listed as: +44 131 225 6111
In June last year, I bought my Saltire Tartan kilt from them without any problems - other than the fact that I had to wait over 12 weeks for it. Still, they were cheaper than anywhere else!! I would not buy from them again, however.

Another instance where it might be helpful if we had locations for posters at X Marks!

While we appreciate your comments below, I must point out that when I read this comment, you made 1 comment that I fell may be accurate....we may have supplied your kilt 30 days behind the scheduled date with our apologies. However, I would like to point out that when you say we are not as bad as the notorious Gold Bros., I think it is fair to point out that we are nothing like them. As kiltmakers, we do not make our kilts anywhere but here in Edinburgh.
The statement that we try to catch the tourist by selling anything that can be called Scottish...I do not understand or agree with this. We are a Scottish Store.....how is retailing basically, what we are supposed to be retailing, Scottish Merchandise, making us a tourist trap?
How is our inventory "far to big for a retail shop" ?????? How do you justify that comment? We have a successful website and a 2 floor shop in Edinburgh by the Castle. How can you comment about our inventory?
MORE THAN THAT....YOUR COMMENT ""The Scottish Store does sell kilts and Highland Dress accessories, but this is not their major raison d'etre"" IS OUT OF ORDER. We are kiltmakers and have 1 floor just for the kilts we make, sell and hire. I am sure you can understand my frustration at these comments. I think they are completely misleading and incorrect even though they are your opinions.

About our name.....if you look again, you will find that this is not a true fact...we have not changed our web address and do not appreciate you suggesting this to everyone.
I was not planning to discuss a matter of why we changed the name on the website,....WE DID NOT CHANGE THE ADDRESS OR CONTACT DETAILS.....however, you left us with no option being that you have created some doubt in some minds about our intentions. So read further to understand why we made this decision.
If you note in your first comment, you compared us to these people called Gold Bros. to clear up all misunderstandings that you have created by all of your comments I will explain further about our name.
We WON A LEGAL BATTLE againest them. They had taken up web domain names, 7 altogether, copied our website in full including hidden codes, taken up a free email address and began a path of destruction of passing off, copyright infringement and loss of sales againest us by pretending to be...basically....us. They placed images from our website on Ebay and had all correspondance directed to the free email address that had "scottishstore" in the email address name. These 7 websites ran for over 6 months and you can imagine how many people thought we were Gold Bros....so their plan worked. I in turn, slapped them with a lawsuit for Copyright Infringement, Passing Off, and Loss of Sales in addition to gaining all rights to the domain names in question. In the end, they settled out of court for at a cost to them plus all the domains handed over.
With this in mind, we decided that enough was enough and to stop any future confusion, we decided to re-name the website to the name of the owner of our store...fully understanding that no one can confuse the name Colin with the Singh family name. That is ALL THIS WAS....NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING ELSE SO PLEASE DO NOT MAKE IT SOUND LIKE THERE IS SOMETHING ELSE BEHIND IT.

My final comment is that we had hoped you would be happy with your kilt other than the fact that it may have been 30 days later than promised. This happens when kilt sales may have increased at the time. I am sorry that you would not shop with us again due to this but more sorry that I could not find any facts in your comments other than the delivery time and I am very, very sorry that I had to write..but when I read this, I could not see why all of the negative lines were there about us selling Scottish goods and more so...about us not selling kilts as a major part of our business.
FOR THE RECORD, OUR MAIN BUSINESS IS KILTMAKING AND WE HAVE A FLOOR FOR SCOTTISH PEWTER AND GIFTS TOO!

Thank you for your time.
We still hope that you visit us the next time you are in Scotland and introduce yourself to us.

Scottish Store/Colin of Edinburgh
I've been reading the messages about Colin of Edinburgh and I wish I'd found these before I purcahsed. I have been waiting for 4 months for a kilt we ordered for our wedding. The kilt has not come, I cannot reach the store via phone, fax or email. Their website is down and the web company told me that the store is going into liquidation and they will post something on the web in a few weeks telling outstanding customers what they need to do.
I am devasted since this kilt is for our wedding and I do not know if we have time to order another kilt in time. I thin it is such bad business ethics not to even notify customers before pulling the website down. I have an order of over 600 pounds that I'm still waiting for.

Are you sure the place has folded? I passed it last week and it still seemed to be open for business then. 4 months is too long to wait for a kilt though, most makers quote 8 weeks so you are right to be concerned. If you paid by credit card they should cover any loss but it doesn't help you with the outfit. MacPhersons - http://www.hughmacpherson.demon.co.uk/visit_shop.html - have a good hire service if you are stuck and are a long established, reputable firm.

Still can't find you
Colin or Linda, I'm writing on behalf of a friend in Canada who ordered a kilt in April. He is concerned that your former website is no longer active. I see that you've changed the name of the company, but I didn't see the new name. I tried to find you by Googling 'colin of edinburgh' and 'bespoke' but that just goes to the old (inactive) web site. Can you please provide new contact information? Many thanks.

Scottish Store Update
Good afternoon / evening all,
I like previous posters I wish I had seen this site/forum prior to my trip to Scotland and the ordering of a full argyll pkg from the Scottish Store.
Buchanan1, I have been able to determine that the Scottish Store in Edinburgh located at #3 Johnston has indeed entered receivership/insolvency protection. I am attaching the text of emails received from the Scottish Tourist bureau (whom I contacted for assistance) and the individuals from Price Waterhouse Cooper who have provided me with paperwork to start my claim and I am happy to share with you and anyone else who may have suffered a loss.
My thanks to my good friend Justhelping who made me aware of this site and began inquiries on my behalf. I will however be consoled somewhat by the wine gums imported when you visit - still have not been able to determine why they taste different than canadian ones - requires further testing.
Many Regards
SD McTavish
Dear Mr McTavish,
I am sorry to hear of your experience regarding the kilt you ordered. I have tried to find more information about The Scottish Store and discovered that they have gone into "sequestration" and that Price Waterhouse Coopers are currently dealing with the situation. I have forwarded your email onto Catriona Lynch at Price Waterhouse Coopers (Tel. +44 131 260 4379) who will send you further information.
I hope that you enjoyed your visit to Edinburgh and that you are able to reach a satisfactory conclusion regarding your kilt order and deposit.
Yours sincerely,
Ben Carter
Dear Mr McTavish
I have received your email address from Ben Carter of Visit Scotland. I understand that you contacted him regarding a recent transaction you have had with the Scottish Store.
I write to advise that J B Cartwright of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP was appointed of the Partnership of the Scottish Store by interlocutor of the Sheriff at Edinburgh dated 6 August 2007. I attach a copy of the interlocutor pronounced that day for your information. As a result of the sequestration, the Partnership has ceased to trade.
It appears from your email that you may be a customer with an unfulfilled order.
I regret to advise that the Partnership is not in a position to fulfil your order. I recognise that you may have a claim against the Debtors on the basis that you may have paid a deposit or paid in full for the goods that you have ordered.
If you do have a claim against the Debtors, I should be grateful if you would please complete the enclosed claim form, and submit it to my office together with any relevant supporting documentation. Please also confirm the date on which the order was placed.
If you have paid for your order by credit card, under the Consumer Credit Act 1974, you may be able to obtain a full refund from your credit card company. The position regarding debit card payments is not enshrined in law, however you may be able to obtain a chargeback from your bank for a payment made by debit card. You may wish to contact your card provider to seek clarification.
I trust the foregoing is of assistance to you. Please come back to me if you require anything further.
Yours sincerely
