Tartan Day '07 in Portsmouth, NH

Folks... ScottinNewHampshire came up with this idea, and will be doing some foot woork to convince a couple local pubs to offer some discounts for kilted gents.

Friday, April 6, 2007, is Tartan Day. Being a Friday, it's also a wonderful day for spending some grand time at a pub enjoying drinks with like minded people. For that very reason, Scott and myself have collaberated on the following...

On Tartan Day, we hope to have an official Kilt Night at The Coat of Arms and/or The Rusty Hammer in downtown Portsmouth, NH. This weekend, Scott will be paying the managers of each establishment a visit, clad in kilt, to pursuade them to join in on this festive occasion. I've suggested he talk them into half price pints, all night, for any kilted gent, but he's suggested a kilted gent's first pint be free. Frankly, either would be a step in the right direction.

Anyway... the plans are afoot. Who's with us?

A little surprised at NO responses at all. I sent PMs to about 6 kilties in the MA, ME, NH area. I'm a little concerned about approaching Coat of Arms and Rusty Hammer about business if there might be a small turnout from XMarks.

Blazn - How long do you think we should wait? I was going to go to the pubs this weekend to talk to the managers.

Let me know what you think.

    Scott

Tartan day in NH sounds good to me. The only problem; I'm really busy these days, and don't dare make plans of any kind. Should I find the time, and the means, I'll be happy to attend.

Also, thanks for the PM. The heads up was appreciated.

    By all means! lol

Oh yeah... for everyone's knowledge, Scott is also planning to look into local hotels for some discounts. Much safer... no one needs to be driving after any drinking!

That does sound like fun. I haven't been able to make it to any of the ones around here in the resent past so I'll try to make this one.

Any idea what the kiltie count will be? I'd like to come up, but I'd need to pass it off as an event or the wife won't be too thrilled about me spending the money to go. Then there's the possibility she'll want to go too. Then it had better be an event or she'll get bored, and think we've wasted our time. She's not too kilt oriented, though she is warming up to my kilt wearing.

Well... from the responses, it's not looking like it'll be a whole lot. There doesn't seem to be much interest.

Went to Portsmouth today to make some contacts. Spoke to Andrew (the owner) of Molly Malone's Pub and Restaurant.

    http://www.mollymalonesnh.com/index.html

This is a very popular place in town. He was quite excited to participate in a Tartan Day Kilt Night. When I suggested "half price pints" for the kilted or those wearing tartan, he seemed to think that was a fine idea. I expect him to call later this week with a final offer (he's also going to talk to his distributer's to see what they might like to do). There is already live music scheduled for that night (10 PM- 1AM).

Also, spoke with Debbie at "Celtic Crossing". She is the owner of a celtic themed store right in downtown Portsmouth. She recently took over this store and has been adding Scotish items (jewelry, tartan items like ties and scarves, clan items like badges, daggers, sporrans, canned haggis, etc). The shop is smallish but it has A LOT of stuff. She is holding an OPEN HOUSE on April 7th and would love to see some of the kilties come down. She currently is running a "Boonie Knees" contest and will announce the winner on Saturday.

Here is a listing of hotels in Portsmouth if you'd like to relax and enjoy yourself and not worry about having to drive at the end of the night. There is taxi service in Portsmouth that can bring you to/from the hotel for a reasonalbe rate.

I hope we can see a bunch of X Markers there.

Oh forgot to mention, when I was at the pub, the barman was wearing his kilt (Black Watch). We created a small sensation because suddenly there were two kilties in the room. Can't imagine how fun it will be to have more tartan-ed up folks.

Oh. Forgot this too. Spoke with my son, who is a student at Plymouth State University and my daughter who lives on Cape Cod and I think I might have them convinced to join us too. I'll try to get Jonathan into a kilt for the night (don't think that will be too hard), as well as my daughters boyfriend (might be a bit more challenging), wrap daughter Alexandria in a plaid scarf and we'll all qualify for discounted brews. Like is sweet!
