Tartan Trews
I was reading threw Ron's thread about the whole dress code thing and I noticed trews were mentioned by a couple posters. It got me thinking, (oh no! I shouldn't be doing that!) that I would wear a pair of trews if I had them. Not all the time of course, but for a special occasion once in a while. If I were in the market to get a pair where would I find them at? I noticed Kilt Store has them. But is there any place that makes decent trews at a more affordable price? thanks guys

trews...
Sometimes Orvis will sell tartan trousers (not technically trews) for around $100 USD. I've also seen trousers in Government Sett (Black Watch) from Polo. Brooks Brothers might be another possibility.
I love trews myself; someday I'll get a pair in the Argyll District/Campbell of Cawdor tartan. They are a great alternative to the kilt for formal functions.
Regards,
Todd

Thanks guys, I'll check into all of those. PV would be great because of the weight for wearing around here. But it would be great if I could find some in my clan tartan. Thanks

Orvis has a sale on their tartan trousers right now, a pretty decent price if anyones intrested. They only have 4 tartans though. Royal Stewart, Buchanan, Black Watch, and a "Sage" tartan. Theyre like $56 plus shipping. Id get a pair, but I'd really like a pair in my clan tartan

Originally you mention that you are looking for trews, what Orvis sells are tartan trousers and not trews. While they are both pants they are not interchangeable. I have seen men wear tartan trousers in place of trews (complete with PC jacket) and trust me they don't work. If it is just trousers your looking for though, I can recommend the Orvis ones, I have two pairs and I am quite happy with them.

I have to respectfully disagree, since I have seen someone wear a pair of BB Government Sett trousers with his PC, and it looked fine.

You know I would think the opposite would be true. At least when wearing tartan in a kilt there is a much higher chance that the average passerby would get the Scottish connection and recognize it as Highland dress. I believe trews, especially stateside, would be far less likely to be seen as such. Therefore it requires even more gumption to wear them.
Trews aren't my thing*, but bully for those that wear them and wear them well.
Isn't the main difference between trews and regular pants is that trews have a much higher rise?

Well I didn't see the gentleman you are talking about but I have seen it done and it is always bad. The main reason is trousers are cut much lower than trews ; this means that the PC or other kilt jacket will be too short and the shirt will show between the top of the trousers and the bottom of the waistcoat, if not when standing still then definitely when someone is moving around or sitting. Second, trews (like a kilt jacket) are more of a form fitting military style garment where trousers are a less formal cut so they tend to look unmatched.
As I said I didn't see the man your talking about and maybe he wears his pants higher than most or maybe that is the cut of BB trousers so he got by, but in general the pairing of kilt jacket and trousers tends to look look about as goos as a kilt and a tux jacket and would be considered as big a fashion mistake.
