strange kilt !

Buttons? on aprons?

Pleats in front? in that case the buttons are on the back.

Actually, it looks quite a good weathered Gordon kilt.

So who wants to let him know that pleats go to the back?

It looks really nice, but 13 across leads me to believe it is only a 26 or 30 inch waist. Not nearly large enough for me.

I can't tell from the pictures if they're actually buttonholed or not, but they're placed correctly to hold the bottom edge of a kilt belt up, I think.

The tartan is Gordon Ancient colors. With that waist, and the apparent length, it looks as though it may be a kilted skirt with the straps reversed. The buttons are a puzzlement, though. Maybe Matt will chime in, since it's a kilt oddity.

Just a thought maybe the buttons are for a set of braces but I maybe confused

Those buttons are confusing. Normally, when you see buttons on a kilt it is to fasten braces/suspenders to. This was actually quite common in the nineteenth century, and I've seen it in some early twentieth century kilts, as well.

However, in those cases the buttons are always at the waist of the kilt.

On this kilt, the buttons seem to be at the hip line. There are two on the front of the kilt, evenly spaced from the center, and one right behind the lower buckle on the right hip. At least that is all I can see from the photos.

I cannot imagine what they might be for! But I do suspect they were probably added after the fact by the owner of the kilt, and not part of the original kilt.

This is a man's kilt, though for a very thin man. MacNaughtons, by the way, is the parent company of House of Edgar.
