    Kilt Hose Colors?

After reading Ron's post about the purple hose he's wearing, I need to get over my personal stigma of kilt hose being strictly off-white or gray. The purple look great with his Isle of Skye. Why do I have this feeling that something other than white or gray is just wrong?

I need to experiment with different colors. I would think dark navy blue or green would look nice with my MacKenzie modern.

    I won't know until I try, right?

If anybody would like to post pictures of their non white kilt hose in action I would much appreciate it. Maybe that will help get me over my reservations.

I echo those thoughts exactly. Maybe seeing some different color hose might get me the courage to wear them as well =P

According to the Highland Clans site (from where I normally obtain my hose) white hose is largely an invention of the rental industry.

Looking at wedding photos you would be lucky to find anything but white or cream being worn.

But even with bought hose white/cream is still the most common and are normally cheaper than coloured hose. Of course they go with just about any tartan whereas coloured hose requires co-ordination so they compliment the colours of the tartan being worn.

There are already plenty of pictures of coloured hose "in action" available on XMarks but I will reprise a couple of my pictures anyway:

Red hose with the St David's tartan (Brithwe Dewi Sant) as it contrasts with one of the colours:

The same tartan with light green which contrasts with another of the colours:

Blue hose to compliment the Roberts cilt:

You will find that many tartans allow various possibilities, all it takes is a little experimentation!

I have the traditional cream colored but I also wear a nice dark green hose that goes well with my favorite Aran wool sweater and another pair of black hose that can look good with almost anything when I wear my Black Watch or Black Stewart kilts. Colored hose are fine in my opinion as long as you match them up with the colors that are either in your kilt or in your shirt/jacket.

With the MacKenzie tartan, modern colors, there are actually quite a vew choices. Of course the off-white (variously called cream, ecru, or arran), the grey, and oatmeal colors look fine with just about any tartan. But with your MacKenzie, bottle green, navy blue, and black also look good if you want darker colors. Depending on the exact shades, lovat green or loden green may also look nice. For a bold look, red hose look nice with this tartan! And I've also seen claret hose (with navy blue garters) worn with this tartan which looked quite nice.

i have cream hose and rarely wear them> I feel that the colored hose accentuates and compliments the kilt. My fave are bottle green, blue and a new pair of red although I do not do the red the justice that McClef and Bradley display. Great look guys!!!

Thanks guys, now I need to go buy some.

Reasonable prices somewhere anywhere? Non-wool would be my preference.
