Where in the U.S. can I find unusual woods?

    Hi all,

I have been thinking of designing a Sgian Dubh. I like the idea of an Ebony handle, with Nectarine wood for the top, and bottom. The problem is I have no clue where to find Nectarine wood. The one time I saw it, it was because my brother chopped down the tree, and made some planks out of it. Then he used it all in a chess board.

You might try http://www.woodcraft.com. There's one fairly near you if you want to go in person... 9891 South 500 West in Sandy.

While they dont have Nectarine, they have everything from African Blackwood to Zebrawood.

    1) if they don't have what you want, they can find it and order it for you
    2) My father owns the Dayton Ohio store (#513) and I work there with him

and I had some dignity until I saw this a few seconds ago, if you want some proof of my working there... : http://www.woodcraft.com/stores/stor...&nav=employees

For crying out loud, it's bad enough that I have to drive to Fairfield when I want a bowl blank, now I have to go to Dayton.

I can attest that they do have a good selection (don't know about ordering), since I made some kilt pins out of paduak (my favorite for turning), purple heart and zebra wood a few years ago.

You got to come up to dayton!

my pop actually just brought home a large piece of paduak and is turning it into an end table. brilliant red color!!

just North on 75 then take 675 to the 2nd centerville exit, right onto Alex-bell Rd. then its on your left at the 2nd stop light

Here's a limited list of resources:

The environmentalist in me cannot resist pointing out that many woods like ebony are being harvested in an unsustainable manner. Check out this website for more information: http://www.iucnredlist.org/
