    Another southerner (US) speaks up

My name is Ken Sallenger, from Columbia, South Carolina. I grew up in South Carolina, and I'm a bit Wallace, a bit Gregor, and numerous bits of other things. It is nice, though hardly surprising, to see a good representation of southerners hereabouts.

I've yet to be kilted, but I'm waiting for a solid cotton canvas from the Scottish Tartans Museum shop. Even though it's not yet here, I feel the desire for more (must have tartan).

As you might guess from my avatar and moniker, I was a music major. I became addicted to software, and have been watching over computer systems for the last 20 years. As noted elsewhere, I'm not skilled on whistle, but modern and baroque flutes with a bit of recorder. I dabble in a little Scots music, nothing organized.

The last Big Adventure for my wife and me was a week in residence at Gloucester Cathedral with our church choir. We saw a bit of Wales this trip, a bit of Scotland on previous outings.

Welcome from JUST north of YOU!!!!
(I was in Newberry earlier today.)

Just what part of Columbia do you live (as narrow or broad as you feel comfortable)?

Also, what kilt are you getting?

Welcome to the neighborhood Ken Don't be shocked if I try to get you to come down for one of our kilt nights and ask you to bring an instrument to share some of your folk music skills.

    Thanks!

My folkie skills are spotty, but I'm willing & have some flexibility. I've dabbled at playing fiddle tunes on the flute. Usually, the modern flute. I gather that most of the Scots and Irish flutists use a "later" model than the one-keyed baroque flutes I have.

I have the classical mindset to some extent (an almost literalist view of notes on the page). I've noticed that folks who play without written music have incredible memory skills, and I tend to frustrate them by not being able to learn a song as readily.

A rock-n-roll friend once referred to us classical geeks as "typists."
