    Dying a Fur Sporran

I've developed the habit of wearing Black (Black shirt, jacket, vest, hose) with my Modern Buchanan as it contrasts better and helps calm down the brightness. I think that black will work best with the Heritage of Scotland kilt I picked up while in Scotland also. For this reason I'm thinking of dying my white rabbit dress sporran, I'll test dye on some offcuts first (brushing die directly onto the fur to soak it, not dipping it). Has anybody done this before?

    The sporran:

    Buchanan with Black day sporran

    Buchanan with the white sporran

Any thoughts? I just think the black looks better against the Tartan than the white.

I've still got "Skippy" for when I want something lighter.

PS, that jacket is "sorted" now too!

I'd be a little concerned with the dye transfering to your Buchanan. It does look good with white fur perhaps a new black sporran would be a better option?

Black is a notoriously difficult dye to get to be dense enough to start with, to keep on the material once dyed, and it can sometimes lead to the item starting to dissintergrate, due to the mordant used.

I'd tend to say play safe and buy a black sporran rather than risking a grey one, or smudges on the kilt, or worst of all a grey sporran with bald patches and a grey patch on the apron.

If I remember correctly you made the sporran, and the others, so why not make a black dress sporran your next leather project? Just a thought as I would hate to see you damage your kilt, or be unhappy with a bad dye job. I think it would look wonderful with the black BTW

one thing from a photography standpoint. you are in 2 very different light settings. the first photo really pulls out the green with natural light. the second pulls out white and black with a florecent (sp?) lighting/flash.

on the dyeing, it is such a pretty sporran, it really is, I think you should keep it the same, make a new one (if McMurdo is accurate) to match you kilt and then go and buy a new kilt to match your white sporran. either way, you end up with a new kilt and a new sporran. its like a win-win situation

Yes, I did make it. The problem is as always getting a cantle and bells, I'm sure I could scare up some Black fur somewhere.

    I'm at a Kilt:Sporran ratio of 3:5 already

What about converting the white sporran with detachable fur a la velcro and replace with black fur to match the occasion or do a black and white rabbit/skunk sporran? Either way go out and buy two kilts to get your kilt/sporran ratio properly alligned. Geesh no wonder the Americans won the Stanley Cup, it was all your fault!

Wot's the Stanley Cup? Some game played by the US only?

    No skunks here either.

Guess I have to find some Black Rabbit, can't think of anything else that would be available to me.
