In search of.......because I am curious

OK, there are many online places to purchase any variety of kilt. My question is where are there stores where I can buy a kilt? I live in the very northwest corner of Ohio (Bryan, OH) which many people I meet consider it to be very rural. My proximity to some cities in this area is as follows:
    1.5 hours from Toledo, OH
    2 hours from Detroit, MI
    2 hours from Indianapolis, IN
    3.5 hours from Columbus, OH

    Any thoughts??

Hi ... you can't find too many shops selling traditional kilts. Traditional kilts are made to measure, so you can only find second hand or ex-hire ones pre-made. Second hand ones are hard to come by online, let alone in Ohio!

What sort of kilt are you interested in? Those of us in the States (without a local kiltmaker) often have to do mail order from domestic or British kilt makers.

I don't know how far you are willing to travel, but in Northern Michigan - Traverse City, there is Henderson Imports...

As far as I know, they will take measurements in-store, but you can also order online with all your measurements. I've never purchased from them, though...too rich for my blood at the moment.

not sure how far you want to travel but here round cincinnati all I know of is the Celtic Corner. http://www.celticcornerstore.com/

I haven't gotten anything from them, but I have talked with the owner who leads the Cincinnati Caladonian pipe band. I am looking into getting a practice chanter from them.

and if you decide to make the drive, hit me up with a PM. love to talk with fellow Kilties in the area!

Another five hours past Windsor gets you to Burnett and Struth in Barrie. You could make a weekend of it, go to the Casino, watch a show, make some money, buy a kilt, whole new life.

Or stop part way and meet Robert at R-Kilts and watch him for a while.

I reason for my inquiry is that I can see a kilt and tartan online, but each computer that I use has a different display, thus a tartan can look different. I would like the opportunity to go somewhere so that I can eye the kilt/tartan directly and handle the material. The internet is nice, but I can not handle what I am looking at.

My wife and I would not mind going on a journey to either Traverse City and Cincinnati.

    Thanks,
    Nate

Many kiltmakers will sell you a swatch of the material so you can see the colors and feel the fabric.

    Talking

Yes, many Kiltmakerd Do offer swatches . They usually cost around 5.00$ or so and will usually absorb that cost when you order your Kilt. I would say , Get in touch with Matt Newsome at The Scotish Tartans Museum. He makes (by hand) 4 yard box pleats, and 5 yard knife pleat Kilts. You can find it easily online.

Check out Highland Fling in Lake Orion, Mi. He doesn't carry many kilts in stock for sale but has a ton of tartan samples to order from. I got mine from there. Gordon is a great guy!

If you let us know when you are coming up this way, we may through together a kilt night!!
