Loud McLeod and Other Fashion Tartans
So I have a bit of a dilemma... I really like several tartans that have now become "fashion tartans". Black Stewart, Thomson Camel, and Loud McLeod are chief among them.
What do you guys think about wearing these particular tartans? Those of you that do, do you get any weirder or more asinine comments than when you normally go out kilted?
I guess the issue is that I don't mind some idiot calling it a skirt, or trying to call my masculinity into check... but I really don't want something that looks like I might have swiped it from my wife's closet!

Myself, I believe a kilt is recognisable as a kilt every time, especially in a tartan of any colour (derogatory remarks from cretins notwithstanding). So my opinion? If you like it, wear it. It's never going to look like it belongs to your wife

My Loud Mcleod kilt gets more comments than any other kilt in my modest collection. It is not for those who do not like attention. It is bright and bold. However It is no more feminine (or masculine) than any other tartan.
Wear the tartan that appeals to you.

I agree. The "shock and awe" factor of the Loud McLeod is definately high but I wouldn't call it feminine. There are opinions that a man in colours not generally seen as masculine is somehow MORE manly because he has the guts to wear it. I have a bright pink shirt I wear in memory of my sister (it was her favorite colour) and all the comments I have gotten about it have been to the effect of "it takes a real man to wear a hot pink shirt...".
There are 10 kinds of people in the world...
Those that understand binary, and those that don't.

Another tartan with that effect is one of the Barclay tartans
Back to the "Loud MacLeod" .... in 1998 I saw a gent wearing a trench coat in this tartan at the Stone Mt. Highland Games at the clan MacLeod tent. That was a lot of "Loud MacLeod."

The Tartan found inside of the real trenchcoats is known as the Burberry Check Corporate Tartan No. 1239. It is restricted to Burberry Ltd. but in the last 10 or so years it has become very fashionable and can now be seen on just about everything.
In London, New York and LA if a woman did not have at least one item of Burberry Tartan she would be looked on as woefully outdated or worse yet poor.

Thanks for the clarification... I assume I'm either crazy or that Burberry is close to Thomson Camel?

Somehow the Barclay tartan seems more threateningly loud as a pair of trews than as a kilt!

We are easy to spot, and generally only confused for Clan McLeod.

I know this gentleman; he's out here in the Midwest. I've seen him at the Buffalo games north of Springfield.
