Dog meets Skunk - Advice?

Took the dog out last night before bed .... once outside he goes nuts and runs down into a wooded area (have about 2 acres of heavy woods on my property) and I can hear all kinds of commotion in the deep dark wood ... grab a flash light run down to save my buddy from the unknown beast.

The unknown beast turns out to be a SKUNK! And being a skunk, he did what comes naturaly to skunks when they meet a dog in the woods at night. Needless to say the smell is beyond the word 'pungent'! Several baths have helped, but you can smell this stuff everwhere in the yard and even in the house now.

Anyone run into this before? I am looking for advice in getting the smell out of the dog (and yard and house) - not just covering it up.

If I get a chance I may end up with a Skunk Sporran sometime this weekend ... errrrr

I don't know how well this works, but I heard that if you're sprayed by a skunk you should bathe in tomato juice. That might help your dog, but for the rest... I don't have any idea.

There are some commercial products available for skunk smell as well, but none work any better than tomato juice.

Wash the dog in that. Wash any bedding or cloth he has laid on by itself in hot water (if it wont ruin the fabric) and let it dry in the sun.

For the outside you'll just have to let nature take it's course.

A dry baking soda rubdown might help too.

Experienced that, the commercial products are better than tomato juice, can't remember the specific one but google should help.

You'll just have to get used to the wet kilt smell for a while.

Mythbusters actually did an episode on that, might wanna check that out.

Also, and EXTREMELY importante' ...check your dog for bites. Skunks and Racoons are well known for being carriers of rabies. Might wanna have the vet test him to be sure, but at the very least, check him over really good...and use a nose plug!!!

Here is the secret recipe that WORKS. Mix the following:

• 1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
• 1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
• 1 teaspoon liquid soap or dish detergent
• Mix these together and bathe ("shampoo" in or rub down) the spray victim thoroughly.
• Be sure to use this mixture immediately after it is created, as it is unstable.
• Rinse with tap water afterward, and repeat if necessary.
• For spray in the eyes, flush with water as soon as possible.

Thanks! I found this one on goggle as well. I am on my way to the store now to pick up some Hydrogen Peroxide. I did read several sites that said tomato juice will only end up smelling like skunk with tomato juice on a wet dog. Seems that one may be a myth.

I never knew that this smell could be so over bearing - this suff just STICKS to you! and really stays in your nose.

bathe dog in Tomato Juice then fill a glass with left over juice ad 2 shots of vodka and some hot sauce drink quickly. The dog will smell better and you'll feel better
