    modern kilt outfit...any ideas?

I've always admired the Keen type sandals I've seen on a couple members here on the board....to me they look like modern ghillies. To that end, what else would make up the perfect "modern" kilt outfit???

I'm thinking a solid or camo kilt...in a modern fabric...likely a hemp RK or maybe a camo FK

    military web belt,
    web sporran strap
    nightstalker sporran
    the aformentioned Keen shoes
sgian would have to be that combo pen/led light/flash drive thing
maybe one of those leather kilt jackets Jerry has on the go

but what about shirt? sox? flashes? waistcoat? tie? headwear?

In my pics, that's basically what I'm wearing: keen sandals, web belt, kilt, R-Kilt sporran. You'll outdo yourself since socks and sandals are taboo. My sgian dubh is clipped to the web belt if you look close.

I wear a different t-shirts with that combo, I hope it looks a bit like your avatar.

Yes, Keen, and similar sandals, are the modern ghillies if you believe those kind of shoes were ever worn in an outdoor setting. Look at them.

I've seen the R-kilt hemp kilt and it's very cool. I'm seriously giving it some thought (in black).

I figure the kilt is timeless. Mine's an army surplus, probably from down by your way, I forget right now where the base is but it's not in PEI. I've got a couple of Eddie Bauer shirts that I wear with it when I want to dress up: short sleeve white, long sleeve white, and a nice OD vented. My work boot plan includes Doc Martens, go figure, so they are supplied on alternate years.

I guess it's the other stuff that sets the time period, not the kilt itself.

    Cloves--great thread!

I'm a Chaco addict for sandals but never noticed the similarity between Keens and ghillies before...I wear Keen oxfords all the time. Some more ideas?

    Kilt=Hemp or the classic wool.
Waistcoat=a lightweight windproof fleece, or even a nice schoeller or other softshell in a steel gray or khaki. Don't forget the inside pocket and headphone channels built in.
Hose=definitely scrunched down (global warming and all)
Shirt=again, hemp or bamboo. The new bamboo jersey feels like silk.
I like the idea of a sgian don't=thumb drive.
And much as I like my Nightstalker sporran a good shell pouch works well and is a little less "trad" looking.

the nice thing I find about modern kilts is.... you can wear just about anything you want with them...I have worn t-shirts... tank tops... golf shirts...solid color dress shirts.. I've worm sneakers, hiking boots, combat boots and sandals... since I wear UK's I don't need a sporran, but a fanny pack turned around to the front would look good too... as far as kilt hose... I don't wear them... sandals with socks to me looks wrong... on some others it looks fine..on me.. not going to happen. with my boots or sneakers, plain tube socks pushed down works and I can get 6 pack of them at Wal-Mart real cheap..

with a modern kilt pretty much everything will look fine... it's all a matter of personal preference at this point

have you seen Keens? they aren't the open toed variety of sandal.

anyways...I was trying to figure what the most similar, but also most modern items of dress would be.

Until the combo sgian gets built...i'm gonna go with a Leatherman.

and good call on the fleece vest Moosedog. Fleece is made of recycled soda pop bottles..so that's definately modern.

So, by "modern", you mean put together a package similar to the traditional but using items of contemporary material or design?

Okay, I'd start with R-Kilts Black Hemp kilt. I saw it at Embro and it is cool. His supplier makes a sharp looking black hemp shirt so that too (I'm hoping to get one this weekend at Fergus). Are Docs modern? I wear them later, when the temperature drops.
Socks are getting all tech, so I'd look for the coolmax kind. Bridgedale has some colourful choices in case I'm getting too black. If I stick with black socks, then a flash would give some colour.

R-kilts have pockets and hangy things so I'd make the paradigm shift to forego the traditional stuff.

Not likely to wear a tie, but if I did, I'd look to match flash and tie. I'd need some matching colour on the upper body.

Still waiting for a review on the Stillwater Leather Jacket. Didn't anybody buy one? (Jerry, please send me one for a trial review.) Otherwise, I'd wear my Batman melton jacket (oho, yep, got one of those, only 300 made).

My sgian dubh would be what I wear now, a CKRT M-16, tucked into the waist of the kilt.

A hat would be a tough choice (no. 1 cure for baldness, wear a hat). I have the hemp safari outback for summer but it's off-white. That would look pimp, so I'd have to look around.

Can't get much more modern than this and still go out for the paper!
