I couldn't believe it...

I joined the local Scottish Society back before their last St. Andrews Dinner and this past Saturday I attended 1 of their 2 yearly meetings. It was a nice evening with food and fellowship but only 1, that's right ONEkilt was worn that evening. It was worn by yours truly and I received many compliments on it, but I couldn't believe no one else wore one.
It's a frickin' Scottish Society for goodness sake.



Later I put in an appearance at the local Irish bar, and got one comment the whole evening. Had a great time there, live music, good Irish whiskey and one of the hottest bartenders on the face of the planet. Time to start working my mojo..

That does sound weird, I just joined Clan Graham at the Fergus Highland games, I hope to join the St. Andrews society here soon, I would hope to see some kilts if I ever go to any event for either, without looking in a mirror.

Oh, and joining the Wallace clan society, or the McGregor clan society.

I'm too cynical, check some of the other threads, but of all the people I meet kilted, they're the ones that scare me the most.

It was a very casual event, held at one of the members homes. And a lot (the majority) of members are older and may feel that the kilt is best worn in a more formal setting. But still I would have though someone else would wear one.

One fellow said I was a better man than he because he wasn't about to wear all that wool when it's 100 degrees outside. I did mention that the kilt is ventilated and if you move the pleats you get a nice breeze!
I did get several compliments including one from a woman originally from Scotland who said she missed seeing kilts and said it looked very nice.

I'll need luck with the barkeep, but a man has to have a dream...

I don't wear my kilt to every function/event of our St. Andrew's Society; for example, we have a Halloween party/bonfire in October at our Vice-President's farm east of town. I usually forgo the kilt and just wear my bonnet with a "ghillie-style" outfit. Same with general meetings, Committee meetings, etc.

Most likely, you will see the kilts & Highland kit at the "main" events, such as St. Andrew's Night, Burns Night, Tartan Day, etc. Have you been to any of those yet?

It really just depends on the event, INMHO. Let's not play "bash the Scottish society" again, please.

I'm not bashing, just pointing out my surprise. And yes at the "main" events they are decked out in highland finery and I understand not wearing that to every event especially when it's 100 outside. Again I'll say I don't have a problem with no one wearing a kilt it was just a surprise. This was the first really casual event I've been to with the Society.

My "bashing" comment was really a "general" comment, not directed at you. My apologies for not putting a beside it.

When I used to do Civil War reenacting, our unit had several meetings during the year where we wore "mufti" instead of our uniforms. Now, I know, the kilt is not a "uniform", save for pipe bands and Highland regiments, but it's a similar situation. Most of the folks you're talking about are usually members of a Scottish society to promote Scottish heritage, not 24-7 kilt-wearing.

I didn't take the "bashing" comment personally, I was just clarifying for everyone that I wasn't trying to bash the society. I'm trying to get more involved with them so I can help get our local Scottish Festival going again. We didn't have one this year and I was really disappointed.

By the way, just so everyone knows I don't take most comments personally. As I like to say, "I've been married AND raised a teenage daughter by myself. You can't scare me!"
