What is considered a large calf?
Okay, I need to know if my current pair of kilt hose are just cheap or if I have larger-than-average calves... and since you guys would get where I'm coming from, I'll ask you (I can't really see asking my non-kilt wearing friends how large their calves are).
I have a pair of hose from USAK. They look great, but the opening on them is close to cutting my legs in two... in fact, to roll them over I end up building up quite a sweat and enduring a bit of pain until I get it past my calf not once, not twice, but three times...
My calves are 17" around... is that larger than average?

I'm a 19" calf. 17 is on the large end. Most of your standard kilt hose are going to be tight on you. Lads like us will eithe rhave to buy hand made kilt hose or settle for non-traditional "over-the-knee-" socks as substitutes.
Check out Hamilton Dry Goods for a inexpensive pair of kilt socks.
FK, the Tarans Museum and USA kilts all sell hand made hose that all reviews say are excellent though a bit pricey.

In my experience if someone has calves larger than 16" around, I suggest they go with the larger calf hose option. Sixteen inches seems to be the maximum that people can fit comfortably into standard hose.
(Mine are a measley 14", so I can only go by what people tell me in this regard -- but I've sold kilt hose to a lot of people and this seems to be the general consensus).

Thanks for the info guys, now I know what I need to buy!
Matt, I saved a link to some large calf hose you said the museum had that were like $27 or so... the link is still active, but I know you said in the post for them that they were a limited quantity thing... do you still have any of those?

That would be this link:

Yup, this is a limited time only thing. I'm already out of cream (ecru), but I have black and navy blue left, and ONE LAST pair of bottle green.

That would be the link. Good news on the black as that's one of the two colors I wanted (ecru being the other).

Mine are 16" and I manage with extra large Tube socks. I do gave a few pair of Kilt Hose, but very expensive compared to Tube (or football) socks.

Mine are 19".. I don't even bother with the standard tube socks.. I just get the crew style. The others wind up around my ankles anyway..

Usually when they get to a certain size they are referred to as "cows."
Sorry! Someone had to make that joke!
