Irish National Tartan history?
Does anyone know (or know where I could find) a brief history of the Irish National tartan?

From Tartans by Air
Irish National
Trade District Universal Tartan
Reference: Polly Wittering. House Of Edgar.
2245Designed for Macnaughtons as a set of trade tartans.
This from the Scottish Tartans Authority
Name of Tartan: Irish National
Alternative name:
ITI number: 2245
Category: Irish Fashion
Designer / Source: Wittering, Polly
Date: 1996
Copyright: Slog: YGG:YGG
Colour Sequence: GGYGKWGGGY
Thread Count: G106DG10Y10DG18K10W10DG4G14DG2Y4
Notes:
Conceived and designed by Polly Wittering of House of Edgar in association with John and Joan (Jo) Nisbet of Piper's Cove in New Jersey USA. The STA does not accept names such as this without proof from a responsible body that the tartan was accepted as a 'national' tartan. The base green needs to be darker. Sample in STA's Johnston Collection.

Now this is the kind of information I have been looking for! Since I have visited the STA site, I am assuming one must be a member in order to get the colour sequence and thread counts? This would be so helpful to a blind individual new to kilts, such as myself, in understanding, visualizing, and colour coordinating the different tartans and accessories. One might go as far to say, that at least the colour sequence should be made available for accessibility reasons, given that everyone else can see the pictures.

So what does this mean? Does it mean that there is such proof, or that there is not such proof.

Two great peoples seperated by a common language.
I think what the STA is trying to say is that just because Polly Whittering named her fashion tartan Irish National does not mean that the government of Ireland has named it their national tartan.

Bingo. To my knowledge, the Irish Republic has never recognised this tartan as the national tartan of Ireland, just as none of the Irish county tartans have been officially recognised by local governments.
Generally, for a district tartan to be officially recognised, it has to go before a legislature and/or assembly. There are a number of American state tartans that have not been recognised by the State legislatures, but carry the name of said state as a "fashion" tartan.

Todd

Thanks, Ron, et al,
But, what (if any of y'all know) was the motivating factor for creating this tartan? I guess I'm looking for the more "esoteric" history......

Why not ask the Nisbets, since they help create it? In '97 I purchased by Malcolm tank from them. Here's the website: Pipers Cove Let us know what they say.
