    Spreading the Kilted Word

Seems like I'm getting a reputation around the Grafenwoehr community as the "Kilted Guy". I've several encounters in the past two weeks that I thought I would relate to encourage those out there that may be hesitating to join the forum or wear their kilts.

The Sunday a week ago I was walking with my wife from the Post Exchange to our car when I hear a frantic honking and someone waving at us! It was the Bank Manager and her husband. She had heard that I wore a kilt most Sundays, but had not seen me yet. She introduced her husband, who was wearing a tartan flat cap. Apparently she has not been too encouraging to him about wearing his Lamont Kilt, but now she sees me wearing one, she might be more supportive.

Earlier that same Sunday, the Chaplain's Assistant, who had asked me about kilts said he has been looking into the forum, but had not joined yet. I had given him the site address a few weeks before.

Later that week, I was at the PX auto parts store and as I was concluding my purchase, the store manager asks me "Aren't you the guy who wears kilts?" I said yes and he said he was thinking about getting an Irish Kilt. I gave him a card with this site on it, so maybe he will be looking in on us. I'll see him next week when I go back for the parts I ordered and see if he has looked in here.

The most satisfying encounter was this morning. I was wearing my Old Lang Syne Grey kilt with a black military sweater and black socks with red flashes. At the checkout at the Commissary, four young men, baggers, were standing at the end of the checkout, loading our groceries into bags when one lad with bright red hair said "I like your kilt" A couple of others chimmed in also saying they also wished they had kilts. One kid made a remark about "skirts" but the others quickly put him down. It was a short but very positive conversation. I told them I'd be back next week with another kilt. I'll also tell them about how the girls go for a guy in a kilt!

Any way, the word about kilts is spreading here in the middle of Germany. I think I'll try to organize a Kilt Night for January!

In my hobby time, I finished up a sporran for a member of the forum and he should be receiving it this week. I tried a couple of new things that improved the product. I'm working on a camera case for my kilt belt that has a more complicated celtic knot. Haven't decided whether to finish it in black or brown. I need a black case however, so that is what it will be. Antique brown leather just looks soooo nice, though.

Here are a couple of Pic of a new brown celtic knot belt that Cavscout sent me. I added a brass buckle with silver thistle. The belt is first class, as always from Cavscout. Thanks Steve. I'm wearing my Antique Hay tartan kilt with a Lovat Green Argyll jacket. The belt is a really dark brown so it is hard to photograph, but it is nice in normal light.

I don't have anything on tap for now, so I anyone is thinking about a custom sporran, send me a PM.

    Regards to all,

    Tom

Very nice all around. Nothing like being a missionary for the kilt.

Yeah, it's amazing, isn't it, how wearing a kilt brings closet kilties out?

I wore my kilt to a business lunch the other day, and the waiter told me about his Black Watch kilt at home. Said he wanted to get more, so I gave him the Stillwater business card I have tucked into my sporran, and wrote the X-Marks URL on the back. We'll see if he shows up here.

A man with a Lamont kilt should be proud to wear it anytime!

Our Kirkin' service at church will be held in a few weeks, apparently the anticipation is building within the congregation. This morning I had several people ask me if I would be wearing my kilt for the Kirkin'. This is the only Sunday of the year I wear my kilt to church, I was pleasantly surprised that some of them remembered me as one of the guys who wears the kilt. I am the guy (the Beadle) who leads the processional and usually end up standing beside the pulpit for few minutes. The rest of the processional goes by on the lower level. It's nice to know that others enjoy the service and look forward to seeing us wearing the kilt.

Right, Tom! Kilts are like magnets they have an attraction. Go for the kilt night and see what else you attract!

Great job Tom. I haven't worn a kilt on post yet (I do on the German economy). If Graf wasn't so far away, I would join you for the kilt night.
