    Wish me luck...

So tomorrow is Halloween as we all know. Or "Fall Festival" as my work likes to call it due to them not knowing what is or isn't politically correct anymore. I've worked at my company for almost 4 years now. I started in December of 2003 and I remember asking my supervisor in February of 2004 whether or not I could wear a kilt to work.

She replied "Oh heavens no. That wouldn't be work appropriate at all"

Now before I get too far into this conversation or others that followed, I should probably tell you a bit about the environment that I work in. I work for a business management company that has over 700 employees in my building and over 50,000 worldwide. We are not a retail company and do not directly interact with the public. However we do have "potential" clients walk through our building on occasion to see how we do things, and also auditors from those that we currently service. Our regular day to day dress code is business casual; Slacks, leather shoes, and a nice button up shirt (tucked in of course).

Now back to the story... I replied to my supervisor "Why isn't it appropriate?" to which she replied, "Guys don't wear skirts, it's not natural" I bit my tongue rather than get into the symantics of it, and historically how incorrect she actually was. I replied "Could you please ask upper management and HR for me though."

I received a response the following morning that apparently came down from the Vice President of operations that kilts would not be allowed at work.

    Over 3 years went by...

3 months ago I stepped into the VP's office and asked if would be ok if I can wear my kilt to work. He said "Nope" and laughed a little. I responded "How about on St. Patrick's Day?" he said "Nope"... "You can wear it on Halloween, since it's a costume." To which I replied "Fine. Halloween it is then. I will wear my kilt to work on Halloween and I look forward to showing you that a kilt can look very business appropriate and can fit into our work environment.

I have 5 other individuals that are borrowing kilts from me tomorrow to wear to work to help me in my cause.

Now before someone responds and says "Where are you're priorities?" or, "you need to choose what's more important, the kilt or your job" listen to this.

Of course my job is more important. I'm not trying to make a huge HR issue out of this. I could have done so 4 years ago if I wanted that. It's would be career suicide to go over my VP's head. I want my cake and be able to eat it too. I want my job, and I want to be able to wear a kilt to work. So like the title of my thread says... Wish me luck...

Good luck! I didn't give my employer a choice. I never really asked- I just wear it. And I am that guy who will get into the kilt vs skirt discussion. So good luck tomorrow! The rest of the world sees the kilt as elegant and classy. It's time the good ol' US of A developed a little culture. We're old enough to grow up now.

When I asked my boss if I could wear my kilt to work, he responded with "You can wear anything you want, just as long as you show up" what else could he say with the last name of McConnell. I am the VP of Sale and Marketing for a small company and do have direct contact with the public, haven't had a bad comment yet. So good luck!!

I work for a HUGE international corporation. If it weren't for the safety factor (I work in a laboratory) I know the kilt would be accepted. Maybe one of these days when I land that REALLY cushy office job (I'm semi-office now...) I'll go for it.
