Buy the art of kiltmaking. Also, I'm not sure of the style(s) of your kilt(s), but they can provide a visual of how a kilt should be made, if there's something about which you are unsure or if you need help visualizing the instructions in that book.

Sounds like some great projects. What tartans are you going to use? Take lots of pictures as you go through the process.

I echo the advice to get Barb's book! Even though I don't yet plan on making my own kilts yet, reading Barb;s book, gives you insigt in much finer detail, than you can ever gain, by just buying kilts and wearing them.
I now know much more than I ever needed to know about the inside details. It makes my eye much more tuned to looking at well made kilts.
Buy Barb's book. It will be money well spent. Plus, when you break into the problem areas, and you need to ask your Mom for help, you can read the relavent parts of the book and it will make it easier.
Good luck! Post pictures!

I can't really give too much advice as I've just started trying my hand at kiltmaking. But I can say the book is great in that it shows common errors in kilt making and how the kilt should look.
As for other resources, you seem to be wearing a kilt in your avatar. Having a kilt to look at is a great resource, at least for me; I am a visual person and prefer to see things rather than to have them described to me.
Barb's "art of kiltmaking" only deals with knife pleating. I'm sure it can be of use for planning to make a box-pleated kilt too but I would search DIY threads for actual box pleating instructions.
Good luck!
