Greatcoat with the kilt? (Now with pics!)

I just won an old British Army greatcoat on eBay. It's an officer's coat, with full turnback cuffs and double breast, looks like it could use a press but otherwise quite nice. I tried one on at an antique store in York last weekend, but it was about a size to small; I could button it up but it wasn't comfortable. However, it did look darn good. I've been looking for one since I saw Ian McKellan wearing one in Richard III, since I didn't bring a winter coat with me to England. Now I'll have one, as soon as I get it cleaned and pressed.

What do you think about wearing it with the kilt? Here's a link to an eBay auction for one in the same style (but definitly not my waist size!): http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ROYAL-WARWICKS...QQcmdZViewItem

I'll post pictures of me in the coat when I get it. The Inverness cape is a long coat to wear with the kilt, but what I'm wondering is how a large double breasted coat will look. I still don't have my wool kilt out here, hopefully that'll happen before Christmas!

    Cheers,
    Nick

The highland soldiers in the movie Tunes of Glory look very cool wearing greatcoats with their kilts, so go for it...!

You made me think of the US Army greatcoat that's been languishing in my closet, lo these many years...the thing is of either Second World War or Korean War vintage. I just took it out to take a look at it and try it on.

So I've gone from a size 38 jacket to a 42 or 44 since the last time I tried it on and just guess how well it fits now?

    Ebay, here it comes!

I think a greatcoat's a fantastic idea. I know I'll be using my wool Civil War re-enacting greatcoat when it gets colder.

    Enjoy that new greatcoat!

Go for it! Greatcoats are great with kilts.

Here's my Grand Illusions replica Union Cavalry greatcoat. (sorry folks, Grand Illusions retired from busines).

Yes, that's the Grand Canyon...a neighbor of mine. And the brown leather Utilikilt.

Only an olde fool would stand on the edge of the Grand Canyon in a kilt on a cold day and take the freezing updraft.

Had thought about trying to convert the greatcoat to an Inverness Cape (which I also covet), but on advice from this wonderful board decided to leave well enough alone.

I'm not trying to hijack the thread, but as long as we're talking about military jackets and kilts... what does everyone think of a U.S. Navy-style peacoat with a kilt?
