US Army Tartan Being Made Official
I just received an email from Alexis Malcolm about the US Army tartan. Here is an excerpt:
Art has just returned from 18 months of duty at West
Point & while there he lobbied the Director of Music
to get the US Army Tartan accepted by the Army as
their official Tartan. He had a call yesterday from
the Director to tell him that it had come down from
the Pentagon that the Army is now in the process of
doing just that & its status will be official shortly.

Hoorah!! Let me just share what another member of this informed me about that process, who is involved in a similar process. It's not fully official until that is done, and then the Tartans Authority in Scotland is advised of this. You might want to pass this along to your friend.
I'm in the process of doing this for the NYC tartan, so I relate and hope it goes well for you!!

Yeah like we really needed a reason to buy a new kilt
but this does move it up on my list

The US Military Academy (West Point) also has their own tartan which their pipe band wears:

I wonder if they can play Benny Havens on the pipes?
Come fill your glasses, fellows, and stand up in a row,
To singing sentimentally, we're going for to go,
In the army there's sobriety, promotion's very slow,
So we'll sing our reminiscences of Benny Havens, oh!

Go Navy - Beat Army!
As great as it sounds for this new kilt, I cannot bring myself to be seen in an army tartan...After serving 6 years in the world's greatest Navy, it would just be insulting for me to do so. But, I do notice Rocky's Navy tartan...hmmm...
