    Sporran Questions

    Hey All,
Just a couple of questions about material. First, I've got a big piece of leather finished in oxblood, think Moroccan, red topped boots, maroon/red etc. What do folks think about a sporran in this color. To me it seems rather garish (no it is not pink!)but my taste is all in my mouth. (I know, photos would help but that is coming slowly.) Anyone have any experience with this color?

Next, How about deer hair sporrans? I've got a nice raccoon mask that I made from a road kill and the ponds at work are full of muskrat but I have some deer hides that need to be used for something.

It seems like Robert at R-Kilts was doing some kilts or belts in Ox Blood color leather recently. You might drop him an email and see if he has any photos. There might even be a member or two here who have an Ox Blood item.

I've got some leather I call tabasco that has a strong reddish color to it that looks really nice so I'd say go for it.

Dang, without a flic, I don't know if its dark oxblood, light oxblood or what. But if your belt matches the shoes/boots - why not?

And any kind of fur can be made into a usable sporran.

    Merry Christmas!

I think the oxblood would look great, it is however not a colour which lends itself to all tartans, but when done right the effect can be smashing.

As to Deer hide I say use it it will give you a great look I am sure.

I made one out of deerhide and the owner is happier with it than I am. It took me three tries to get it right, however, because the hair goes in all directions and when you cut out the pieces yo may find they look asymmetric becasue of that, with the hair sweeping into one side and off the other. You really need to study the hair directions before you cut.

When you said oxblood, I was thinking Doc Martens Oxblood rub-offs... Oxblood base with black over the top for a marbled effect... very cool.

I think an oxblood sporran with matching boots would look the business... especially if both were rub-off. Oi!

No - I don't like it. The color is way too artificial for my eyes. When it comes to clothing, I'm more of a subdued person, I guess.

I'd agree that it is too Red. However Don't let it stop you making a sporran .
