Tartan proportions question
Is there anyway to find the proportions for a particular tartan in order to try my hand at weaving my own?
I'm particuarly interested in the Clan Cian tartan,
which I've found Captain also has some attachment to. My mother, though not a Clan Cian member, is a Carroll. That means, essentially, that the Clan Cian tartan is my family tartan (the Warren side of my lineage has no tartan... silly English ). I've thought of paying up to become an official member of the Clan, but have yet to follow through.
As far as the tartan, I've only seen it for $85+ per yard (though it has been some time since I last looked). Where I'd love to have a kilt made from this fine tartan, the Minister of Finances (read: wife) is not too keen on dropping a minimum of $340 just for fabric. I could probably pursuade her to let me make my own (though I'm not terribly certain if there would be any monetary savings in doing so). Not to mention... how cool would it be to strut about in a tank that I made with my own hands using material that I also made with my own hands?
Anyway... just trying to figure out how to learn the proportions without actually joining the STA. Thanks, all.

You can join the Scottish tartan authority. They should have the thread count for tartans.
Also look at this:

wait, are you aiming for the proportions (ie, size) of the sett? or the thread count? or both?

Both, really.
ChattanCat posted a link for a PDF that has the info I'm after, though it doesn't have the tartan I'm after. There's some really good info in that PDF file, though. Thanks, CC.

There's a couple ways to go. Try sending a PM to knowledgeable XMarkers (Matt Newsome, STA member; or, michael steinrock, officer of Clan Cian out this way) and request the thread counts. Or, order something small made from the tartan (which you can use later, like a swatch or flashes, shawl for the wife, etc.) and count the threads yourself. Happy hunting.

[Woh! Thanks, The Wizard of BC. ]I guess I should look into how to join the STA. Was all that information that you posted from a web site?
