Songs of Robert Burns
I've always loved Robert Burns' songs. About 12 years ago Andy M. Stewart, late of Silly Wizard, put out an amazing disc of Burns songs on the Green Linnet label, but alas it is out of print. Now I see the Linn label has put out a 12 disc set of the complete songs. For US $95 it is a steal, but I'll have to wait until my Christmas bills are paid (not to mention my new argyle outfit on order). The discs are also available individualy and for those who just want a taste there is a sampler called My Hearts in the Highland. I just 'downloaded' (also available from the Linn site) this and it is terrific. I can hardly wait to order the whole kit and kaboodle!

Not to hijack this too much, but I really like Andy Stewart. WHen I was in Glasgow about thiss time last year, I was in a hostel overlooking the Clyde. My traveling companion soon got tired of me singing "Song of the Clyde"

There is Andy Stewart and Andy M Stewart. The former is a middle of the road Scottish singer of traditional stuff. Andy M. was in Silly Wizard a contemporary celtic band. I highly recommend anything by them, but especially Caledonia's Hardy Sons and By the Hush. All of Andy M.'s solo stuff is fantastic, specially By the Hush, Fire in the Glen and if you can find it Songs of Robert Burns. Both Stewarts are good, but Andy M. is one of my favs.

oh man, I didn't even know that. Open mouth, insert foot
Always good to learn about other Andy Stewart. I think I actually do have some Silly Wizard somewhere. I'll have to give it another listen.

Well, I went to the site and ordered the collected works. The whole thing.
I listened to some of the highlights and if the rest of the songs are like those, it should be really enjoyable.
Thanks for putting us on to it.

Amazon
I spent all last night on Amazon perusing through their cd's of Burn's work. I found some pretty decent stuff on there. I would really like to have his complete works that you mentioned here, but I cant afford it right now. I wonder if I am extra good if I might get it for Valentine's day. . . . .

I really like Smithfield Fair's album. Their "Scots Wha Hae" and "My Hearts In the Highlands" are my favourite renditions.

I found a song a couple of days ago that I really like. It is called The Band of Shearers. I don't know if it is a Burn's song, probably not, but it has his flavor.
I found it on a site called efolkmusic.com They promote albums from newer or lesser known bands and soloists in several genres, including celtic. Costs $30 a year and they have member downloads from the various artists' albums.
The version I downloaded was by Janet Russell. There is another version by Tanya Brody that I have which is good but Janet Russell is better.
Now I'm waiting for the Burns collection to arrive!
