Kilt at the Castle
I'm watching a show on HGTV called "Keys to the Castle" about castles in England and Scotland that are actually lived in. The actor John Barrowman (Torchwood) is the MC. One of the castles he went to is Cawdor Castle near Loch Ness. Since he was in Scotland, he wore his kilt. It's a red kilt, but I can't figure out the tartan. He actually looks really nice in his jacket, rabbit sporran, white hose, and ghillie brogues. During the show, he says he might lapse into his Scottish accent, which he does, because he grew up there. But I thought he was American. Oh well. Another fine example of the wearin' o' the kilt.

He is indeed Scots born. He grew up right here in Glasgow before his big move so his accent slips back whenever he's around other Scots.
If it's the one in the picture below I think that's the Royal Stewart, but I've seen him in quite a few kilts.
He wore a blue and green tartan when he and his husband got married.

That's interesting... When my mother lived in Ireland, she went over to Scotland several times to look at the castles that had been in the clan of her family name on one side, but I don't remember her saying anything about ever seeing a lived in castle. I might ask her. She went to a bunch of them, not just the ones with the family name.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I have that episode on tape from last year.
Yes, it was Royal Stewart as I recall, and Cawdor was the only Scottish castle he visited. The others were south of the border & I'd have to go back and watch it to recall which they were.
One bit I would mention, when he wore the kilt was I noticed he wore a belt even though he wore a vest under his coat. It just didn't look right & kept bugging me! Oh well...

Okay, got home from work, tossed in my tape and here are the other 3 castles:
Athelhampton Manor (Dorset)
Longleat (Wiltshire) home to the Lord Bath &
Kentwell Hall (Suffolk)

Just curious if the Chief's family has been the only residents of Duntrune, & if you know how long?
I ask because Cawdor has been continuously inhabited for over 600 years by the Thanes of Cawdor.

John Barrowman only uses his Scots accent on the phone to his mum! he moved to Illinois (hope Is spelt it right) as a young man, and was teased about his accent so set about changeing it.
hes a fantastic actor/ singer/dancer , who despite his accent has never forgotten his Scots roots, he "married" his partner in a civil ceremony last year in a PC and the Kilt.
my favoutite castle is Tulloch castle with its phantom piper and Green lady

Sounds like my wife's story when she moved up here (Washington state) from Texas to go to the UW. She got razzed so much about her Texas accent she set about trying to lose it (which wasn't near as strong as a Fort Worth friend of mine!)...

During the Cawdor segment he lapsed back into a pretty thick Scots brogue
