    To stripe or sett?

For this tartan? It's Modern Clan Young and I have yet to get a Kilt made of it but I'm looking at it and I can't really decide.

    Here's the plaid:

If this was your Family plaid, which would you prefer? Price means nothing to me, it will be in 'medium' weight anyway. I'm looking at aesthetics right now. If needed, my waist is 37" and length of the garment is 21"

    Thanks for your help.

If you're undecided, it might be a good idea to get your kiltmaker to pin the pleats in (or at least some of them) to the sett and both stripes, send you pictures and then decide what you think looks best.....or post all the example pics up and take another poll

Clan Young USA is headquartered in Milwaukee, and I'm friends with them all. All of them wear their kilts to the sett, and it is very beautiful. The stripe would look good, but having seen about 20 Clan Young kilts together, all pleated to the sett, is amazing.

I think that tartan would look really good either way, but I am a bit partial to pleating to sett.

    I'd pleat to the sett

I'd pleat to the blue-black-blue stripe in the green field. The dark blue field with the pink and yellow overstripes will be noticeable in the pleats, so you won't lose the overall effect of the tartan.

so far 13-6 in favor of sett...I guess that's what it's going to be.
beloitpiper...you don't happen to have a pic of the Clan Young's Kilts, do you? I'll explain why I don't have a clue what they look like...
For the last few years at our annual Celtic Fest, the festival promoters...in their infinate wisdom, - ::eyeroll:: - decided to move the Clans to another area of the festival. That new area has about 50% less traffic than the beginning years and the Clans have boycotted the event because of this.
The volunteers for the Clan Young tent were women, my mother included (before she had to go on bottled O2) and when the Clan finally created the Modern Young Tartan...it was the year prior to the officials moving the Clans...I was able to see it on the Ladies by way of their shoulder-Plaids (sashes) for that first year...but it's completely different than seeing a man's Kilt.
see now, why I ask to the stripe or sett and for pics...lol....

It doesn't take 10 minutes to fold up some tests and have a look at them. If you do, make the pleats about 3-4" to 7/8" at the hips and somewhat smaller at the waist (if it's going to be a standard 8 yard kilt), and pin them to hold them. Stand back about 15 feet, and see if you like it. The differences can be striking. And it really doesn't matter what the votes are - it's your kilt!
