    How would you respond?

I know this most likely has been asked somewhere before, but myself being a newbie, and a bit lazy to go search for it,I was wondering:

How would you handle a situation or what would you say if some said:

( Yeah, but its still a skirt) Had a jerk say this.

( Is that a Kilt?) Had someone ask this in a crowd at a super market.

( Hey dude,Love your costume) Idiot at the mall while we were Christmas shopping.

( Hey Bud,would you not mind wearing your kilt? I have some buddys coming and two are very homophobic ) Said by a former friend when he invited my wife and I to a cookout last labor day.

These are just a few,but they are well offset by all the positive comments over the past year or so.

When people are simply being rude, as in a few of your situations the best thing to do is to ignore them.

After all if you wrestle a pig, all you're going to do is get dirty and annoy the pig.

Know up front that wearing a kilt is seen by some as unusual. Most of my immediate family have been very supportive and even think that it's pretty cool.

My 15 year old Step-Son finds it embarrassing to be with me when I'm wearing a kilt. I have on a couple of occasions chosen not to wear a kilt, simply to help him be more comfortable.

Hang in there kilts have a long tradition, and have been around longer than trousers.

    Cheers,
"..., and wrote upon it - In memory of our God, our religion, and our freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children...." Alma 46:12

Well the short answer is it all depends on the situation. I've come across quite a few comments, however I find that as I gain more experience with the kilt the comments I get have become for the most part positive. All of my friends have accepted my kilt wearing and now it's just not a big deal to them, its what I wear not what they wear, so just as I do not tell them how to dress I do not allow them to tell me how to dress.

Both are very good advice, and I think it depends on how well you know the person that commented.

Best advice is to ignore it. With the "jerk" for instance, to respond might be an invitation to a brawl (knowing jerks).

Being 45 and having been around the block so to speak, I usually take most negative comments and turn them into a kilt tutorial. Skirt,---Kilt ,whatever..... Here is the difference. and so it goes. I've lived long enough to know intelligence and just plain ignorance. Enjoy being yourself as you are the only one that really has to answer for you

Ok Tommie, the skirt comment, I would just accept that and let it go. I think maybe the same with the costoom comment. It's the last comment that would bother me. I read it very carefully a few times and you said "former friend,," so I'm thinking that one is resolved in the way I would handle it.

    Hope that helps.

My response- Intelligent, cultured people call it a kilt.

Simple answer to this one- "Yes!" I had a lady say to me once that she had never actually seen a kilt up close, and was very impressed at how masculine and attractive they actually are. She had always assumed that they were just glorified skirts before she got a good look at mine.

    Ask "What costume?"

To this I say "So the problem with wearing this ancient and traditionally masculine garment, then, is... what exactly? If they're too ignorant to recognize it for what it is, then that's their problem; not mine." If the problem continues, also remind your friend that ignorant is what we all are by the very nature of being human (we can't all know everything about everything) and that stupid is something we choose to do. If these people choose to be stoopid, then by all means, let them. Or as me GrandDad Leddy used to say "You can lead a jackass to knowledge, but you can't make him think."

And there you go. This is really the core. If you feel the need to respond, then do so in a tasteful and intelligent way. My grandpa Leddy also used to tell me that if you don't have anything intelligent to say, then you shouldn't say anything at all.

Ok, I didn't read any resoponses before I crafted mine....here goes:

I know this most likely has been asked somewhere before, but myself being a newbie, and a bit lazy to go search for it,I was wondering:

How would you handle a situation or what would you say if some said:

    ( Yeah,but its still a skirt) And.....your point is?.

( Is that a Kilt?) Yes, it sure is!.

( Hey dude,Love your costume) And your's is great too! Thanks!.

( Hey Bud,would you not mind wearing your kilt? I have some buddys coming and two are very homophobic ) I'm not sure why your homophobe freinds would have a problem with a man wearing a man's garment.

My Answer to that would be "why should they care? I'm straight"
I refuse to pander to the irrational prejudices of small minded idiots.

Let's take 'em one at a time:

    (Pause.) "And ... ?"

If the conversant tries to make the point that skirts are women's clothes, you can counter by 1) pointing out that women are more likely to wear pants than skirts these days, and that no one says that pants are women's clothes, and 2) when was the last time you saw a woman wearing a kilt? (If he brings up Catholic schoolgirl uniforms, smack 'im.)

    "Yeah."

That one's pretty straightforward. It may well be that this is the first kilt this person has ever seen in action.

Rather than respond, just give 'em a "***?" look and shake your head sadly.
