    Molded Sgian Dubh Sheath

I've been running the risk of slicing up my kilt hose when drawing or sheathing my sgian dubh. The stock sheath that came with it did not do the job so here's what I replaced it with.

The knife is fairly top heavy, so I have to push it deep into the sock to hold firmly and not have the grip extending past my knee. In that position, there was close to 2" between the op of the sheath and the top of my sock. Now, with teh sheath extending from deep in the sock to the top, and a snug fit around the grip, the knife stays in place much better and less chance of slicing my hose. The formed opening also helps guide the blade in easier as well.

This wasn't too difficult of a project, just time consuming since you have to wait for the leather to dry and then stitching it together (broke several needles in the process). There are some spots on the leather that did not take the stain well, so I should have taken more time there to prepare the leather, but it will be in my sock so it will seldom be seen.

All in all, I'm much happier with this setup.

Thanks to Joe Gondek for the inspiration for this project.

Nice leatherwork. It always amazes me how many talented people there are on this site.

It's a cork screw on one side and a Bottle opener/screw driver on the other

I've sewn very similar molded sheaths for sgians that I've purchased and created.

It's peculiar how one can buy a well-crafted blade and the sheath that accompanies it is mass produced and practically worthless. Trying to remove both items together can be a futile effort.

My addition though, is to add a tab of leather to the half of the sheath that rests agains one's bare leg. Doing so, enables one to remove the sgian & sheath together. Or if one requires only the knife, it can be grasped and the sheath left inside the hose.

How often has any of us dug into his sock trying to re-locate that cursed leather sheath?

Very good idea! You could also incorporate a small hole in the top of the sheath and loop a thin leather lace through it to provide a "low profile" method of removal. Tuck the lace into the hose top until needed.

I think though, with this sheath coming to the top of my hose, it should be easy to fetch instead of having to dig 3" down into my sock to get hold of it

When I was into the Rendezvous Scene, I noticed some participants using a similar strip of leather connected to their sheaths.

They would tuck the knife/sheath into their high-top mocs as we do sgians, and pull the both of them from their moc. The end of the leather strips were always decorated with glass beads that often 'clicked' as they strode by.

Most just hung a small knife around their necks for convenience sake.
