Where to go in AZ?
Hello, Rabble,
I plan to be in Scottsdale in March...I will just miss the Highland Games but I do have some free time on the weekend.
I hardly ever get to "fondle the goods" at games or Scottish shops...sporrans, jackets, sgians and the like. I either buy via the internet or make my own. But it would be fun to see some stuff up close. Do you all have any suggestions on where I might go in the area to check out some kilt-related items? I will have a car and a willing driver. Oh, and my mother, the master kilt hose knitter, will be with me, too. So a willing passenger as well!
Thanks,
Moosedog

I am a newbie to the kilted world but live in phoenix and did some serious researching before diving in recently. The only real kilt shop in town is in Scottsdale (AZkilts.com). They have a small shop with nice stuff and do custom orders along with their kilt outfit rental business. Only other place is in Phoenix (Kiltmart.com) and is only open by appointment---never been in there.

Hope your trip is fun, Moosedog. I don't know of any other kilt related places out here either. Too bad you aren't looking for a cactus, LOL!
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Moosedog as it has already been stated, the only real kilt place is Azkilts in Scottsdale. Greame and his wife are great people to deal with. There is a Irish store in Tempe and we have a Irish/Celtic cultural center in Phx. Also not knowing the exact time frame when you will be here, the Drop Kick Murphys are playing on March 3rd and Flogging Molly is playing on the 16th. If you pm myself or Ayin Mcfye we could also see about getting some of the rabble together for a pint or six.

There is also this guy. His shop has some neat stuff. I'd call first as he pipes a lot of events.

I believe AZ Kilts has short hours on weekends, just Sat mornings...double check.
The Arizona Ren Faire is still cooking on March weekends, think there's a thread on it on the board. They sometimes have "stuff" and I've used Ren Faire stuff like pouches as sporrans and large sporrans. Have seen kilt pins and pins that would work as kilt pins...and Jacobite like shirts.
Don't know if NativEarth still has a shop at the Ren Faire...its where I got this big one, its a purse/pouch that has an easy convert for sporran use.
I've had this Ren Faire pouch too many years to recall where I bought it. Works great as a small sporran.
Point is - there is "some" hands on stuff at the Arizona Ren Faire and its freeway close to Scottsdale
If its late in March come on up to the Camp Verde Highland games on the 29th.
And there's all kinds of St. Paddy's stuff if you're in town that weekend.

Great, thanks for the tips! I'll keep checking the thread for other ideas as well.
Ron, I had wondered about the Ren Faire, that is a possibility.
I do appreciate the invite from you locals; I'd love to visit and to catch some music but am not sure I'll be up for a kilt night--I'm actually in town to have some diagnostic work done at the Mayo and so will probably not be able to do much...current plan is to be there March 2-12.
I am always kilted, though, so no matter what, it'll be a kilt week in AZ!

Hey, Moosedog, the others Zonies have pretty well covered what's kilt-related in the Valley, here. While Arizona Kilts may not have a lot of in-store merchandise (since they're geared mainly toward rental), what they do have there is quality stuff & Graeme is a great lad with excellent knowledge of all things relating to kilts & many interesting stories to tell.
Too bad you're not likely to be here on St. Patty's weekend, there'd be 2 fine kilted options for you - 1) that weekend (March 15th & 16th) will be the Celtic Nations Celebration at our RenFest; scroll down this webpage for details,
http://www.royalfaires.com/arizona/Default.asp?Page=68
2) our own local group of kilties, the Sonoran Scotsmen, will be doing their infamous St. Patty's Pub Crawl.
Also, one kilt place the others didn't mention that's worth a visit is the Tilted Kilt. Here's a link to their website for info.

I'll PM you with my phone# & hopefully we can meet sometime while you're out here.

As a local physician (pediatric radiologist) and a recent patient at Mayo feel free to PM me if there is anything I can do to help while you are here. I will be off work at least part of that week but may be out of town for several days as well. If a kilt night out does get organizized give me a shout and I will likely be up for it.
