I saw this on the news this morning. I had no idea about the origins of the melody or the lyrics. I'll never think of the song the same way again.

I'm sorry, Trefor, I forgot that that may not be something that's common knowledge outside the USA. I meant it sarcastically, anyway. The Kennedy Center Honors are given for "significant cultural contributions to the performing arts". It's one of my "go-to" references when I'm being sarcastic...much like my insistence that the guy who invented the "magic can" (the one with the little nitrogen capsule in it) for Guinness should get the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

I play "Derry Air" quite a bit, particularly at Irish-American funerals (in the Catholic hymnal it's called "Go Silent Friend"), but often as part of my sets as well, where I always segue into something more up-tempo, usually "Sean South" and "God Save Ireland". It's frequently requested, and I'm an entertainer; I try to play what people want to hear, and anything is better than "Amazing Grace".
I was at an Irish Festival once, and I must've piped AG by request a hundred times, until I simply refused. "See that guy in the next tent, selling swords, dirks, and axes? He says if he has to hear "Amazing Grace" just one more time, he'll run me through."

This is GREAT news! While we're at it, can we ban "Amazing Grace" too?
