    When are colored hose appropriate?

Kilted brothers & sisters........I attended a Tartan Day dinner with the local Scottish society and I went semi-formal in my Gordon tank and Argyle jacket. I wore dark green hose and was told later that that was a faux pas. I was told by a member that I should only wear colored hose when I'm totally casual, and always off-white when wearing a jacket and waistcoat. I thought the outfit looked smashing and I was even complimented by some ladies, but when I went into the kilt shoppe to pick up my new MacQueen, I was set straight! Anyone have any opinions either way?
    Thanks,
    RB

    Oh no... Not again...
From what I've read on this forum, that is bacwards.
I don't seem to have a link handy, but I've seen the white vs colored hose issue come up over and over.

Oh, balderdash. You can wear colored hose pretty much any time, and there are people here who will tell you that it's white hose that are incorrect for formal wear.

Did you demand to see the offending person's kilt police credentials?

    The Kilt Police Strike Again.
I would think the Gentleman you were talking to lets his kilt hang in the closet most days of the year and has proscribed to the rental shops view that Off White is the only way to go, this simply is not true, as evidence I would say take a look at Hamish's Photo Gallery, the photos of Panache, what Matt Newsome wears with his kilts, and dare I say it my own gallery, I know Hamish, and Matt both wear the kilt everyday as do I, I'm not sure about Jamie, but if you look at the galleries you will see some well dressed gents who rarely wear off white hose with semi-dress.

Actually I've heard this from more than one Scotsman.

Supposedly white hose wasn't even considered normal not too many years ago.

As I understand it, kilt hire (rental) firms began to offer white hose to save on maintaining large expensive inventories of variously colored woolen socks. White ordinarily goes with everything, therefore one hose type covered all kilts.

Didn't take long 'til it became the 'standard' with all its latter day associated myths.

As for me, I have a large drawer stuffed with nothing but non-white hosiery.

    Slainte yall,
    steve

    Horse puckey!

I'll echo the sentiments of all of the fine fellows above me- coloured hose is fine for formal wear! I don't even like the look of white hose, personally. I used to own a pair of off-white acrylic hose, but I gave them away because I never wore them. Wear what you like and tell the kilt police to stick it... in a sack.
