    sporran closure

I have a question for those who make sporrans...either just for hobby or commercially...and those who use a sporran.

What do you think of magnetic closures?

I was contemplating using one and then reconsidered when I got to thinking about the effect a magnet might have on a credit card or a cell phone or something like that--especially when I thought about using a rare earth magnet.

The magnet closure would be VERY convienent. No fiddling with latches or catches. You bring up an interesotting point about the credit card. I work at a hotel and the guest frequently demagnatize their card keys by placing them in proximity with cell phones. Granted the credit cards are better designed and higher quality magnetic strips, but I hate to think of the scrambling that might be done by a rare earth magnet.

If all else fails call the credit card company and see what things commonly demagnetize their cards and how much it would take to do it.

I havent personally owned one of the sporrans, perhaps someone with more experience will chime in.

I'm not an expert by any means but a low power magnet should not be a problem for credit cards or small electronics. My Buzz Kidder sporrans use magnetic closures and I've never had a problem with any of my cards or cell phone. I believe to do any harm you would have to rub the magnet vigorously over the credit card to effect it.

Mythbusters tested the credit card/magnet myth, and it took one helluva magnet to scramble a card so badly it couldn't be read...

I've got a Buzz Kidder sporran with a magnetic closure, and I absolutely love it.

My Buzz Kidder sporran is magnetically closed and I've used it for a couple years without having any CC problems.

The only effect of commercially available magnetic closures is to cause you credit card balances to increase. Rare earth magnets are overkill. My A Hay is magnetic and works perfectly.

I have two Buzz Kidder sporrans, they use magnetic closures. I carry lots of stuff in these awesome sporrans, including my cell phone, wallet (with credit cards) and other items. I've never had any problems due to the magnetic closures.. I don't think the magnets on these closures are powerful enough to do any harm.

I've never used them before. Been kinda leery of them. I was not too sure they would stay closed. All the replies are encouraging though. Let us know how it works out!

All my Buzz Kidder sporrans have these type of closures. They work great and I often carry just my DL, a credit card or debit card and my cell phone all rubber-banded together in the sporran and have never had an issue.
