    Military Kilts

Does anyone wear a military tartan (USN Edzell, USMC, USAF, etc) with their mess dress jacket? If so, how was it received, and do you have a photo? My husband is dying to get a Clan Edzell to wear with his Mavy mess dress.

While the Mess Dress jacket of the Marine Corps is cut high and could be worn with a kilt, any Marine doing so would be considered "out of uniform" as the kilt is not authorized for wear.

I know of no Marine who has worn his Mess Dress jacket with the kilt, other than to look longingly in a mirror.

Of course if you were to take all the rank insignia and buttons off, it would cease to me a Mess Dress jacket, and then it would be just another jacket. The colors would go nice with the Leatherneck tartan.

Retired people, like me, don't have this problem very much, because all of our service uniforms shrink rapidly when hung in the closet....

There is an unauthorized pipe band that wear a highly modified dress blue uniform, but they have no official standing in the Corps.

    They have a web-site ..here..

Your right James, I didnt relize it but all my uniforms from the Navy and my present job have all shrunk. It is an amazing thing. Some one should find out what causes it. Gov study is needed.

I would suggest that you just invest in a decent Prince Charlie jacket and leave the military mess dress jacket for military balls when the entire uniform is more appropriate.

I have seen it done at weddings and In my case I went to the first Flag Officer in my chain of command (a Brigader general) to get permission to cover my backside. Then the funny thing was that he did it also to the Dining In . CR66

As for the Army, contact was made with the proponent and as of now, the kilt is not an authorized wear item. Therefore, no other part of the military uniform may be worn with it.

So, in order to wear the kilt, it must be done as civilian attire.

As stated above, get a Prince Charlie jacket and make the most of it.
