    Sporran Belt Question

I was planning on making a braided leather sporran belt and was looking for materials.

What is a good size for the overall width of the leather?

I found some braided leather 5/16" wide and think that may be a bit too thin.

The sporran belt I purchased from The Scotland Yard is 3/16 thick. I have one that is 4/16 thick and it is, in my opinion, too thick to handle.

I have several sporran belts and they all measure out to within a 1/16th of being one inch wide!

I had one (that got cut off my body) that was around 3/4 " but it was a little thin.

You need it to be just wide enough so that it doesn't roll or turn in use, and fits the slot on the sporran.

    I recommend 1 inch wide.

I have been real lucky browsing the ladies purses at the local thrift store.
If you can find the type that have a long shoulder strap with two clips at the ends you can usually buy to whole purse for under $5.00. Once you get outside take the strap off the purse, walk around the building and throw the purse in the box and let them sell it again.
I like to find the straps that are between 3/4" and 1" wide.

Thanks Steve. That is great advice.

But I had to laugh, only on X-Marks could you make that statement and get away with it!
